Ancient, abandoned

The lost city of Hahendraparvata dates back to 802 AD and is located 40 kilometres north of the Angkor Wat complex. To see the ancient trees swallowing the even more ancient, abandoned buildings is a sobering, beautiful experience.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned (Ships and Boats)

The S.S. Maheno, a Scottish built luxury passenger ship which served in WWI as a hospital ship was decommissioned in 1935. Whilst being towed to Osaka, Japan on 25th June 1935 a cyclone separated the tow line and she drifted, abandoned until she beached on the 9th July 1935 on the Fraser Island coast. She was used for bombing practice in WWII and her rusted remains are buried under the sand (approx 3.5 storeys are under the sand.) Boats become abandoned I imagine because they are no longer seaworthy, have become too much trouble to look after or their skipper has put them into a place that is just not worth the bother and expense of salvaging them. This is the case in the above abandoned boat in Bowen Qld above and on the Noosa river below.

One recent famous case of the abandon ship being called was when the Pasha Bulker, a coal carrier, whilst waiting in open seas for permission to enter Newcastle Harbour for loading, ran aground on Nobby’s Beach (the main surfing beach in Newcastle) in a severe storm on the 8th June 2007.

Instructions were given to her, along with 56 other waiting ships, to put out to sea to escape the approaching storm. The Pasha Bulker disregarded the advice and beached at 9.51 am in horrendous weather. The Westpac rescue helicopter, at great risk, winched the 22 crew members to safety, abandoning ship.

Fears were held that it would break up causing a huge pollution problem and the nation watched as the salvage operation took place. The first two attempts failed but on the third attempt on the 2nd July at high tide successful reflotation occurred to the great relief of all. It was eventually towed back to Japan on the 26th July 2007.

Look Up, Look Down Challenge: Bucketts Scenic Walk (Wk 28)

And everything in between.

The Bucketts Walk is a according to the council website a “1.5 hour walk to complete” (1 hour up and half an hour back) “with good views of the Gloucester township and surrounding area. The ascent is hard, but well worth the effort. Ferns and Orchids can be seen during the climb, as well as Wedgetailed Eagles. It is possible to continue the walk beyond the end of the official walk, however, extreme care should be taken as there are some steep drops and loose material underfoot. Wildlife in the area includes the Wallaroo, Red-necked Wallaby, Burtons Lizard and Peregrine Falcons.”

Everything the council site said I can verify. We decided that it was the best place to show off the town to my seventy-five year old German brother-in-law when he and Roger’s sister were visiting us. We had not done the walk but many of the countless people we had recommended it to whilst we were at the store said it was fantastic. They didn’t tell us you needed a level of fitness that perhaps we didn’t have.

Off we set, Ludolf wearing what had become his Australian uniform – hat with fly net set off at a slow pace. Roger took off at a rapid pace but Ludolf soon caught up with him as Roger, doubled over, perspiration dripping from his face struggled for breath. “You should take off at the pace you are going to be able to continue at so that you never have to stop” said Ludolf as he strolled past him, little perspiration evident on his brow. Ludolf, despite his years managed the climb easily at his constant pace. “I’m used to walking in the alps” he informed us when we were all finally at the half way tin roofed shelter.

The shelter was obviously an old structure where someone had lived or camped at some point as there was an old cement pebble water tank from which we obtained some drinking water. We looked up and then we looked down and decided to continue upwards to the top of the Bucketts. There are many theories on how the Bucketts were named. Most likely it was from the aboriginal Buckan Buckut (Father of Stones looking down on sacred land) and the European settlers heard this as Bucketts. One of our famous bushrangers Thunderbolt made camp and evaded the law in some of the many caves found in the rocky summit.

When we reached an area where we had to rock climb to go further up I decided to stay behind but I became bored waiting and wondering what was up there, I too climbed the rocks to the top. The view was fantastic. Our car was just a spot in the valley, 450 metres below where we were standing. A Peregrine falcon circled above.

Descending was much easier that ascending but much harder on the knees and legs. By the time we reached the car my legs were shaking uncontrollably. Ludolf seemed to have no ill-effects at all.

Given our experience I was in awe when a friend decided that she was going to walk the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea and to get herself in shape for it every morning she walked up the Bucketts before breakfast. I haven’t done it since although if ever you are there I’d recommend you do it at least once, taking Ludolf’s advice and taking it slow and steady.

A Lingering Look at Windows: Week 9: Gaudi

Designed by Antoni Gaudi, The Casa Batllo , now a world heritage building is one of the must see buildings in Barcelona, Spain.  Gaudi was an architect who belonged to the Art Nouveau (Modernisme period in Spain) and was famous for his unique styles and individualistic designs. When he gained his architect’s title in 1878  Elies Rogent who signed it declared “Who knows if we have given this diploma to a nut or to a genius. Time will tell”.  Time has told.  Constuction of the building commenced in 1905 and completed 1907.

The landscape, the old architecture and nature of the country was so striking as we travelled between Barcelona and Pamplona that it was clear that it would inspire great artists such as Picasso, Salvatore Dali and Gaudi. It would be difficult, I thought, in that environment not to be creative.

Shauny Award and Friends and Followers Award

I was thrilled as I always am when I was nominated for not only the Shauny award but
shaunyawardalso the Friends and Followers Award by Sherri Matthews who writes from her summerhouse. She has a wonderful blog -she stirs kinds of emotions with her writing , humour and the occasional sadness. Her enjoyable from the heart memories will stir your own memories and together you can wander down a path that perhaps you weren’t planning on exploring today but the sheer unexpectedness of it and the delight she gives you makes that path even more special. Sherri also writes about Aspergers as her daughter has this condition. An interview she did recently with her daughter was fascinating and can be found at

friends-followers-award-1This award was created by http://www.nerissaslife.com to celebrate the 75,000th hit on her blog. A monumental amount. Well done Nerissa.  Thank Sherri for passing it on to me.

This award has a few simple rules:

  1. Post the award on your blog
  2. Thank the person who nominated you and follow them by any means necessary
  3. Pass the award to a few friends who already follow you
  4. Let your nominees know they have been nominated

BUT, and it’s a very big BUT, I find it simply impossible to send this award on to just a few. If you are reading this blog you are a friend or follower. In this case you are nominated for this award. I would like you  all to know that I am very appreciative of all of you who read and follow me and although I try to keep up with you all I do at times struggle as I can’t just put a like – I have to read your posting. Perhaps I’m not the fastest reader and I know that as I am doing my Masters at the moment and life has to happen as well I don’t get around you all as frequently as I should.  Please take this award as my thank you to you.

Congratulations everyone.
