Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Friday Fictioneers: A Bit of Fun
“Did you hear that?” Ellen poked Darrell in the ribs. “What?” “There it is again. Hear it?” “Yes. Don’t worry. It’s an old house. It just creaks a bit.” He’d used this place before to bring the girls he picked … Continue reading
99 Word Flash fiction: Offerings
Acculturation happens in subtle ways. As a westerner with facilities most of us take for granted we can afford the luxury of being horrified at the eating of certain animals. I used to wonder how the French could eat horse meat. … Continue reading

Despite the cold Juanita rose early. Dawn, her favourite time of day, filled her with hope and joy. She ran to the bridge and stopped. It was dangerous to go further. Later in the day the sound of artillery fire … Continue reading

“We’ve got to pull together to get through before the gate closes.” Ruby yelled to Luke. “One, two, three. Pull!” They continued upstream pulling together at each gate. “This is the last one. Hold on tight. You okay? You look … Continue reading
99 word flash Fiction: 2am
Janice sat bolt upright, glancing at the clock. Two am. Quietly, to not wake her sleeping partner, she rose. It had come to her. Funny how that often happened. Sleeping freed her brain. Floating on air with happiness, she crept … Continue reading
99 word flash Fiction: Carrion and Plum Pudding
The stench of the decomposing old man’s carcass filled the air. Rotting road kill.Hit and run. In the desert heat the unfortunate fellow would bloat, explode, and have his bones picked bare by the circling vultures in only a couple … Continue reading
Weekly Writing Challenge: The irony of it all
The wheeze came again. Jackie felt in her handbag. How could she have forgotten it. She always carried it with her. The Ventolin puffer wasn’t there. “Mum we have to go. I need my puffer.” It was a fantastic excuse to … Continue reading
