Shoe Dog: A Book Review

Although memoir is my genre this was one I didn’t want to read (another’s  book club choice) but it hooked me from page 1 and I couldn’t put it down. This memoir of Phil Knight and Nike was a tale with dramtic peaks and troughs, moving swiftly from one crisis to the next. It was motivational and inspiring. I felt that the band of misfits (including the author) would never have made it in a conventional world but under Knight’s skilful lack of management they all flourished to make Nike what it is today. This is a book that business men should read, sportsmen would relate to, shoe dogs would understand and the average person, such as myself, would enjoy as a jolly good read, written with a distinctive voice that you know is as truthful as those in the company showed themselves to be in the court case. I for one will be looking at shoes differently and that swoosh has definitely taken on new meaning for me.

Available from Amazon  I would highly recommend it.

Weekend Coffee Share 4th March 2017

weekend-coffee-share-new-home-nerd-in-the-brain-1Welcome and come on in. I’m glad you’ve come because it gives me a rest from packing. Yes, the cardboard boxes are out and I’m working away in earnest. The removalists have allowed me 30 boxes. I think that should be enough but I know we will be doing  a few trips with the loose stuff that just won’t fit in a box; things like table lamps.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I have resubmitted my work. Now the long wait until I know the outcome. Last time it was 5 months. Hopefully this time it will be no more than 3 but I am not going to give it another thought from this moment on. There is too much else to think about.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you this coming week is a busy one. It is Roger’s birthday on Wednesday and mine on Saturday. I have to have the packing finished by next Sunday. We are going out for a romantic birthday dinner on the Thursday night and out for lunch on the Friday to my favourite spot at Cotton tree.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that Roger sold his car this yesterday. I was relieved as we no longer have garaging for three cars and  it is too expensive to keep them all registered. For him though it was letting go of his youth. He loved the car and it never missed a beat. He liked its throaty hum and the wind whistling through his hair. He hated the fact that he had to sell it for less than we ended up buying a big new bed. He knew he loved the car more than he will ever love the bed. These endings as you get older are unfortunately a necessity.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you I have nothing else to tell you. Our weather has been threatening to storm and the only time it succeeded was when we weren’t expecting it. Then it was a humdinger dropping 112mm in less than an hour. The thunder and lightning were loud and frightening. I slept through the lot. It woke my Mum and set off their fire alarm. She went out and followed procedure only to find herself alone in the corridors until the fire brigade turned up. Thank heavens it was a false alarm as no-one else woke. I wonder if I would have.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you I am going to go to a discussion group this afternoon on the making of identity. I have strong views on this subject but it will be interesting to hear what others think. I will be doing a book review and continuing on with my cruise series. This week I’m going to talk about the food on board.

Now. What about you? What have you been up to? Read any good books. I needed something mindless but enjoyable so this week I have been reading a Janet Evanovitch book. What has your weather been like? Warming up yet?

Thank you to Nerd in the Brain for hosting our coffee share. For other coffee venues.

Dental Memories: Times Pasts

IMG_0512

Last night we watched Intolerable Cruelty yet again. It’s a good film if you haven’t seen it. In it George Clooney plays a divorce attorney. His smile (and the good teeth he exposes in the smiling) are something that is hard to forget. It also gave me the prompt for this months Times Past. I have written a fictional dental piece  (Part 1 , Part 2, Part 3) but dentists are something that still make me shudder when I think of the dentist despite knowing that times have changed. I am anticipating that the further back in generations we go the more we will shudder with the newer generations not knowing that a trip to the dentist should fill you with fear. I am also anticipating that geographical location will make a difference to our experiences. I am looking forward to hearing your dental tales either in the comments or in a separate post. For guidelines  but all you have to do is advise of your location at the time of the experience (country city or rural) and what generation you belong to.

Silent Generation Australia city

In my mother’s day only a few families could afford to go to the dentist and it was avoided where possible. Holes went untreated and teeth blackened and died. There was definitely no orthodontics. People held on until they were in their late teens, early twenties and then had the lot removed (healthy as well as rotten teeth), replacing them with the false teeth that were then, quite fashionable.

Baby Boomer Australia country

We had quite a healthy diet as children and had less fillings than were normal when I was a child. We hated going to the dentist even though we rarely needed anything done. One of our early appointments must have required a filling and I can still hear the high pitch whirring of the electric drill and set up every visit afterwards to be filled with fear. It did make us fairly consistent with our teeth cleaning. When I was around eight the dentist informed my parents that my teeth were too big for my mouth. Something had to be done. I wasn’t privvy to the alternative forms of treatment that could be performed and a decision was made that eight teeth would be removed to make room for the new ones to come through, giving me a bite that would be straight. At the time I would have been happy to have crooked teeth, they would have given me personality. Instead every few week I’d be dragged to the dentist. The needles would come out and pushed into my gums, separating flesh from bone and gristle. I would need holding down as I would kick out, my mother threatening punishment if I didn’t sit still. Then with my jaw prised wide apart the drill would loosen the tooth and the pliers would grip it, the dentist pulling the tooth leaving a bloody socket which my tongue then had to continually explore. I grew to hate the dentist, a feeling I have not quite overcome today despite finding that the only pain the dentist causes now is the hole he leaves in my pocket.

5 Words in March: Thursday’s Special

The five words that Paula has used to stimulate our creativity in March are:

commanding, coarse, gibbous, incremental and

indelible

Almost full, neither waxing or waning,  the gibbous moon floats

illuminating the road, whilst the internal light display shows the incremental increases in speed, the revs building up until the optimum is reached.

The gibbous moon is loathe to leave as morning breaks. The hovering balloons have a commanding position to see the sea, the moon and the waking city below.

Soon we are walking along the coarse sand, leaving our footprints and paw prints in amongst the pellets the sand bubbler crab has scoured for the almost indigestible, inedible material they have found.

But what we want is something indelible and cruising in Milford sound certainly fits the bill, giving unforgettable memories. No wonder New Zealand’s commander in chief, stood tall, proud of his country of scenic beauty that, early in its history recognised the rights of the indigenous people— now stands with a commanding view over the nations capital, memorialised.

Whether the weather be wet or fine: Weekly Smile

img_0260

© irene waters 2017

Australian meteorologists have a lot of trouble predicting our weather. We were amazed when we visited the UK in the nineties that the forecasters could predict the weather to the hour and they would be correct. That never happened in Australia then, or now.

Yesterday for example I received 27 SMS messages that severe thunderstorms with damaging hail were predicted by….. Certainly as can be seen from the sky there was a possibility but we neither got rain, hail nor any thunder and lightning. I go onto hyper alert if a storm is possible, particularly if I’m driving.

Tonight, as I was travelling to dog training I had to smile. The weather report followed the news. That was not surprising in itself but the forecaster stated “It is raining unless you put your head out the window and see the sun shining.” I wonder if he’ll have a job tomorrow but he certainly brightened my day.

Look up,

Look up towards the sky

For that is where our dreams reside

we might need light to guide the way

or have to climb up stair by stair.

Although those dreams may be contained

those dreams of others may be on show

So keep on dreaming

for one day those dreams will materialise

when looking up towards the sky.
