Weekend Coffee Share: 11th March 2017 Happy Birthday to me.

Welcome. Come and join me for a coffee or tea at Jaspers. Today is my birthday but I had early chores to do so I didn’t arrive at Jaspers until a bit later than normal. As a birthday treat I decided to have a raspberry and white chocolate muffin. Yum….I’ll sit awhile to give you time to join me but today I have a lot to do.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you I have been busy packing most of the week and now just have those difficult things to pack. The boxes are piling up and I feel as though the place is a total mess but that it reminds me that the reason for cupboards is to hide the mess and my cupboards are now bare. I have left only enough plates , glasses and cutlery for one meal but those are interesting in themselves as I have packed the cooking equipment.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you the lack of cooking equipment hasn’t been a problem yet as we went out Thursday night for a romantic celebration of both our birthdays. We went and had a Maltese meal at a resort and sat overlooking the pool. The sunset on the way there was to die for.

Friday Mum took us to the Boat House at Cotton Tree, one of my favourite eateries, for the same purpose. Great meal and no need to eat Friday night.

Today I am finishing off the packing and going dancing tonight. Should be a good night.

Blogging — there is a new Times Past prompt  on dental experiences. I also posted a review of Shoe Dog – the story of Nike and its creator – and another about the meals on the cruise. This week we stop off in Auckland. That is we stop off if I have both the time and internet. I have spent hours on the phone organising electricity and telephone but I still don’t know if I have managed to get the internet connected although I am sure it is being cut off here. If I am absent for a few days that is the reason. Unless I review a book I have read awhile ago a book review this week will not happen either as I just haven’t had the time to open a book. I may also miss coffee next week as I am going to the Gold Coast for my nursing reunion – 40 years since we graduated. It is so hard to believe.

I’d better stop talking and let you get a word in. How has your week been. Are you warming up or cooling down? It is our best time of year now with the days perfect for any activity but the mornings and nights have turned cooler making it perfect to sleep. Have you read any books? Seen any films? Done anything?

Thanks to Nerd in the Brain for hosting our coffee mornings. For others opening their doors for a chat over a beverage.

Getting a bite to Eat on board

Before boarding I researched how to survive the amount of food I was going to be presented with. There were lots of hints: ask for half serves of everything, sit with your back to the smorgasbord or avoid them altogether, don’t eat between meals.

I was set to try all of these but I ended up trying none. We had opted to have anytime dining which meant that we would be allocated to the first available table when ever we turned up. Our dining companions would alter each night – or we could choose to sit alone which we did the first night on our anniversary where we got a barbers quartet and a super yummy cake.

Every other night we sat at a round table with six people. As everyone wanted to have a good time most nights were very jolly. The waiters also went out of their way to make each meal memorable. The quantities of food served in the two dining rooms we could use was not massive. In fact I would say they got it just right. I never walked out feeling I had overeaten, nor did I leave feeling hungry. The quality of the meals was always good, a couple of times above average and less often superb. Never were they bad. After eight days, although the menu changed they developed a sameness about them.

But that was okay as you could go to one of the three gourmet restaurants, or try the crab shack, the smorgasbords or simply have a hamburger at the bar (first photo). You could even get ice cream cones.

We ate at the smorgasbord every day for breakfast and lunch but after a few days where you did try everything and find that your eyes were bigger than your belly you tended to just become normal again and have healthy choices. My favourite for breakfast was a baked apple, a little natural muesili and plain natural yoghurt. But there was simply everything. These were open 24 hours a day. Hygiene was a big issue and they placed a hand disinfecting policeman at the entrance to the smorgasbords. We did not hear of anyone getting sick and we certainly didn’t.

In the aftermoon or morning if your were into teas (or coffees) you could go to the coffee bar where you could get salads, pies and lots of sweet pastries. They also served a continental breakfast which I did not try. I was amused as in the afternoon a waitress would wander amongst the tables offering milk and cookies.

Of course there was room service if you didn’t want any of these options but again we didn’t take up the experience. One experience a veteran cruiser told us about that we made sure not to miss was the last night on board. He told us they only do it at the first sitting so on the last night we fronted up at 5.30pm to eat. A little early for us but we weren’t taking the risk. Roger took on the excitement of the occasion, still giving me instructions which I ignored whilst the fellow we were dining with was unimpressed although he did glance up at one stage to see if Roger was for real. I of course took a video which your can watch below.

Volcanic Words: 99 word Flash

Setting off at dawn Joshua and Darryl picked their way up the side of the volcano in silence.

“I’ve never met anyone with such a revolving door as Rhonda. The other night I saw Henry  and Peter both visit.” Joshua broke the stillness of the morning, puffing out the words venomously as they neared the rim of the volcano.

“Why don’t you mind your own business?”

“Just think you should know you’re sweet on a woman with ….”

“Look at this slag,” Darryl interjected pointing at the scoria remaining after numerous volcanic eruptions. “look at those colours. Beautiful……. like Rhonda.”

In response to Charli’s 99 word flash fiction where she asks:

March 2, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) include slag in a story. Slag is a glass-like by-product of smelting or refining ore. Slag is also used in making glass or can result from melting glass. It can be industrious or artistic. Go where the prompt leads.

Respond by March 7, 2017 to be included in the compilation (published March 8). Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

Unfortunately, in Australia, there is probably a more common usage of the word slag which I have also incorporated in my flash this week.
