Busy: 99 word Flash Fiction

Dahlia and Rhonda sipped their coffee as they chatted not glancing in Bee’s direction. Yawning, Dahlia swung her legs onto the table. “I’m tired.”

“Why? What have you been doing?”

“Nothing. You almost finished Bee?”

“No. I’ve got tables to set, flowers to arrange and the speaker wants the projector stuff. I’ll have to organise that. Would you set the tables for me? The sooner I get home the better. I’ve got the dogs to walk, dinner to make, the kids to pick up before I come back .”

“Sorry Bee. Too busy. Gotta go. See you tonight. Coming Rhonda?”

In response to Charli’s flash fiction prompt where this week she writes:

September 7, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a busy character. It could be a busy beaver, gnawing birch trees endlessly or an executive on the go. Go where the prompt leads.

Respond by September 12, 2017 to be included in the compilation (published September 13). Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

The soft wear gently

The hard more slowly

Washed and rolled

Those jagged and sharp

cut like a knife

Others

small grains

soft underfoot

yet tough as glass.

Girt: The unauthorised History of Australia __ Book Review

xgirt.jpg.pagespeed.ic.YoOaAllu35

courtesy  Booktopia

David Hunt’s history of Australia Girt is the funniest book I have read in a long while. In a similar vein to the writings of Bill Bryson Hunt takes the historical truth and writes it in a way that makes you laugh out loud. This is the first book in a very long while that I could not help but read passages out loud to my husband who has decided that he too will now read the book. His style, wit and language make this book a joy to read.

The book starts with the discovery of Australian and why most of those who are credited with first discovering it did not at all and at the fascination of the Dutch for nailing kitchen plates to posts. He finishes with Governor Macquarie in the early 1800s. Thankfully a seccond book has been written that will take us further along in history.

Hunt describes the book as revealing  Australia’s past – “from Megafauna to Macquarie — the cock-ups and the curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are.” I totally agree with this description.

Throughout the book he offers footnotes which are explanatory asides. For example in a section talking of our founding felons he mentioned that having asked for breeding women he was given a 70 year old cheese thief called Elizabeth Beckford. At this point a footnote was attached and it read ” Many first fleet convicts stole food to ward off starvation. William Edmunds was transported for stealing a cow, while Thomas Eccles was exiled for filching bacon and two loaves of bread. If Elizabeth Beckford had joined forces with these criminal masterminds, the cheese and bacon burger would have been invented 140 years earlier.” (p103)

Being an Australian I knew the history that was contained within the pages and I don’t know whether it would lose the deeper meanings for those reading who did not have both that knowledge and a knowledge of current Australia, but I think the humour, typically Australian, would be universal. Although at times Hunt is not politically correct he is at no time being nasty and he leaves no-one untouched with his tongue in cheek humour.

I would highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read the sequel True Girt.

Weekend Coffee Share 10th September 2017

newcoffee

Welcome and come on in.  Before we start would you like a beverage – I have almost everything in the hot drink department and you are limited in the cold drinks to water, water or water with cordial. I do have fizzy water that you are welcome to try.

As we drink our coffee lets give some thought to those that have already been effected by Cyclone Irma and those that are waiting for it to arrive. I know that waiting feeling but I’ve never experienced anything like Irma and I know how terrifying it must be. I hope everyone stays safe.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that unlike many parts of the world our weather has been beautiful as far as clear skies and warm temperatures. Our only need is we desperately need rain. It seems ironic that parts of the world are getting much more than they want and some are getting little. With weather such as ours it is difficult not to have had a happy week. Monday started off with yoga, Tuesday a massage, Wednesday a coffee with a friend who is now in the States, Thursday a skin cancer check and Friday lunch with Mum and a romantic dinner for two followed by the theatre Friday evening.  The only fly in that perfect week was the doctor discovering a mole on Roger which is being removed on Monday.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I saw the David Williamson play “Jack of Hearts”. The playwright is probably the best known in Australia and has done screen plays for 24 films including Gallipoli, Pharlap and The Year of Living Dangerously. It was a superb production and very funny. For an amateur theatrical company the acting was superb (I doubt could have been done better anywhere.) Mind you most of the actors have a background of some sort in the theatre. If you live or visit in Noosa you should go and see this play.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am excited that I am going to be hosting a writing competition for Carrot Ranch in October. Keep your eyes open. I will be telling you more about it in the coming weeks.

I have finished reading Girt by David Hunt. I haven’t laughed out loud in so long when reading a book it was a real joy. It was so good that it is the first book in years that I have been guilty of disturbing Roger’s pursuits to read him passages out loud. He is reading it now. I’ll do a full review on it sometime during the week. My writing is still scant but I can feel it is about to burst forth.

Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee and thank you to our weekend coffee host, Diana, from part-time monster for having us and giving us a place to meet up.

Waiting: Weekly Photo Challenge

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

According to my husband, half his life is wasted waiting. Waiting for me is his biggest bugbear, waiting in airports is not so bad

as his other bugbear – waiting in traffic. Half my life is spent at traffic lights he says but I know that is simply not true.

As some time is spent in queues. Perhaps waiting is a way devised to enforce some unwanted relaxation on those that like to be on the move all the time.

Waiting is also a good way to get the gastric juices going as the passing smells make you drool.

Not only do people wait wondering what comes next.

All focused, all ready, all waiting.

Arriving early to an event means that sometimes you wait alone

Sometimes (if you are not like my husband) patiently.

Five Words Sept 2017: Thursday’s Special

Once a month Paula invites us in Thursday’s Special where you can pick one word or all and post one photo or many. The five words this month are : vantage, bifurcated, intruding, jagged and quayside

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

© irene waters 2017

From my vantage point in the sky tower Aukland I can see the birfurcation  in the river mouth. Taking one side leads quayside. Big boats and little boats, passenger liners and cargo carriers.  Intruding into the sky are loading cranes and tall buildings but none reach the jagged clouds above.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The road bifurcates at the quayside. Piles of jagged rough-sawn timber await loading onto the boats. My vantage point allows me to see clearly but intruding is the reflection of the window from the other side of the bus.

The Lorelei sits in her vantage point in the middle of the Rhine where her rock causes a birfurcation in the river. Sailors who leave the safety of their quayside berth are drawn closer to the jagged rocks by the irresistable song she sang. No intruder to the rock survived.

From my vantage point in a light plane the odd bifurcation in the mighty Colorado River was clearly seen. I felt as though I was intruding. The steep, jagged cliffs of the Grand Canyon should have had The Havasupai  people standing on the cliff tops or pulling their kayaks, quayside, onto the island in the middle of the river. In this ancient place a plane load of tourists didn’t seem right.
