Not a Snake in the Grass

What do you do when faced with a dilemma? Sometimes it is not as clear cut as you initially think. My first thought when seeing this snake in the roof was to let the owners know that they had an unwanted guest living in their roof space. Then I thought — what if they panic and try to kill it. It is a harmless snake, not hurting anyone, probably keeping them free of mice and yet their fear might overcome that and cause them to harm it.

This so often happens in life – you know the right thing to do and then your self speak comes in and worries about the consequences that might be caused by you speaking out. You deliberate — should I /  shouldn’t I and by the time you have decided then perhaps it is too late to take action and you let it go. The  snake has slithered out of sight and you can then happily ignore that you even saw it.

A book that looks at the question of whether to tell or not tell is Herman Koch’s book The Dinner. This book looks at the moral dilemma of two brothers, who over dinner, discuss the unspeakable act of their children. You are drawn to side with one of the two ideologies that arise. I found this fascinating as it was a book read for our book club and the members took different view points. Those with children all went the path that I felt was morally wrong. All without children followed the other. I would like to think that if I did have children I would still have chosen the path I did but that is a question that I cannot answer. It is like believing that, should I be a politician, I would not be able to be corrupted but how can I be so sure? One can believe what they would do but that is easy to say when you are in a position that no-one has any desire to corrupt you. All I can hope for is that I would hope I wouldn’t be corruptible.

When the dilemma posed is that of a snake in the ceiling the outcome effects few and the consequences dire for possibly only the snake and perhaps, if they do attempt to kill it, the would be killer. More people get bitten trying to kill snakes than at any other time. If however, the dilemma is one of national consequence, such as North Korea, the outcome, if either leader becomes fearful, is going to have dire consequences for thousands of  innocent people.

What did I do about the snake. I decided to tell the occupiers that they had a snake in the ceiling but please not to harm it. I also gave them the phone number of a snake catcher that would relocate the serpent to a more congenial location. They were grateful. They had suspected due to a bad smell emanating from the vicinity of the ceiling. They would not hurt it.

I hope our world can be saved as easily as this snake.

Weekend Coffee Share 17th September 2017

Welcome and come on in.  Before we start would you like a beverage – I have almost everything in the hot drink department and you are limited in the cold drinks to water, water or water with cordial. I do have fizzy water that you are welcome to try.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’ve had another good week although I have been busy. We decided that it was time to do some art work in the garden so we got out the spray paint, visited the tip and went to town. I like the end result but don’t worry if you don’t – art is such a personal thing and it is impossible for everyone to like the same thing.

Our first piece was a piece of aluminium that obviously came from a workshop that cut out widgets of some kind. This only cost us $10 from the tip and a can of gold spray paint finished the piece.

Enthused by that success I would have put a smaller one on the other side of the fence but Roger thinks it would look better down the other end and he opted for a rising sun behind Buddah. At night I love the effect of the gold shining behind the serene head although I am not too sure about it in daylight. Neither is Roger because he plans on redoing it so it sits a little lower.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that the next project in the garden is the small veggie patch. I want to get the tomatoes out of pots and this will achieve that aim. Today we erected it and worked out where it would sit. Now I just have to remove a small amount of grass and level the garden bed so it sits level. There is something about working out in a garden that calms you down. Even sitting eating my lunch with my book on my lap I find peaceful.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you we went out on Thursday night with our friends for our fortnightly restaurant discovery. This week we went to the Copperhead Restaurant and Brewery. The atmosphere was great sitting in a cavernous brick and timber building with subdued lighting. The vats (if that is what they are called in a brewery) adding ambience and an enticing bar area. The place was packed with people sitting in the bar waiting to get a table. It opened about two months ago and it obviously is the type of venue that is desired. It served good pub type food with designer beers and some unknown wines.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that apart from my regular activities – toastmasters, dancing, dog training, book club, yoga and perhaps a few more I spent what spare time I had on book work and it was about time. I’d let things get on top of me and I feel a great weight off my shoulders just getting done what I so far have managed. I will continue that this week. The other thing that hit me like a bolt of lightening due to a conversation I had with fellow blogger Sarah from Lemon Shark is that it is so easy to accuse others as not seeing writing as a valuable pursuit and the pressure they place on you as the reason you haven’t the time to finish your manuscript or what you are working on but in reality it is ME that devalues writing by allowing it to happen. If I put a great value on it I would simply say No. Things are going to change and I am going to approach my writing with a new view point and dedicate enough time to it as it is valuable and I am going to finish it.

Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee and thank you to our weekend coffee host, Diana, from part-time monster for having us and giving us a place to meet up.

The Show must Go on: Three Line Tale week 85

tltweek85

photo by Matt Palmer via Unsplash

His audience sat silent, captivated by Otto’s rendition of the Fairy Princess. The unexpected explosion of fairy dust caused a collective “oooh” from the audience and a sharp intake of breath from the performer as the stardust left his eyes red, gritty and with a pain that made him want to scream. Steeling himself, Otto finished the performance blind.

Imitation: Thursday’s Special

When the Vanuatu boxing champ came to our island and stayed at our resort, all our workers suddenly started imitating him. Sparring with each other whenever possible.

Were dinosaurs able to walk on water?

In response to Paula’s prompt for Thursday’s Special

Imitating is something we all do. I don’t know who said it but according to them nothing is original. This makes sense as once a theme has been done once everything that follows is simply a variation of it. Originality becomes harder and harder to achieve the older the world gets. Possibly the only thing that is original is yourself so if you want to stay original  – then be yourself.

Some quotes that I enjoyed about imitating.

“When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other.”
― Eric Hoffer

“Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery – it’s the sincerest form of learning.”
― George Bernard Shaw

“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.”
― T.S. Eliot, The Sacred Wood

“Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence.”
― Marty Rubin
