Weekend Coffee Share 10th September 2017

Welcome and come on in.  Before we start would you like a beverage – I have almost everything in the hot drink department and you are limited in the cold drinks to water, water or water with cordial. I do have fizzy water that you are welcome to try.

As we drink our coffee lets give some thought to those that have already been effected by Cyclone Irma and those that are waiting for it to arrive. I know that waiting feeling but I’ve never experienced anything like Irma and I know how terrifying it must be. I hope everyone stays safe.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that unlike many parts of the world our weather has been beautiful as far as clear skies and warm temperatures. Our only need is we desperately need rain. It seems ironic that parts of the world are getting much more than they want and some are getting little. With weather such as ours it is difficult not to have had a happy week. Monday started off with yoga, Tuesday a massage, Wednesday a coffee with a friend who is now in the States, Thursday a skin cancer check and Friday lunch with Mum and a romantic dinner for two followed by the theatre Friday evening.  The only fly in that perfect week was the doctor discovering a mole on Roger which is being removed on Monday.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I saw the David Williamson play “Jack of Hearts”. The playwright is probably the best known in Australia and has done screen plays for 24 films including Gallipoli, Pharlap and The Year of Living Dangerously. It was a superb production and very funny. For an amateur theatrical company the acting was superb (I doubt could have been done better anywhere.) Mind you most of the actors have a background of some sort in the theatre. If you live or visit in Noosa you should go and see this play.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am excited that I am going to be hosting a writing competition for Carrot Ranch in October. Keep your eyes open. I will be telling you more about it in the coming weeks.

I have finished reading Girt by David Hunt. I haven’t laughed out loud in so long when reading a book it was a real joy. It was so good that it is the first book in years that I have been guilty of disturbing Roger’s pursuits to read him passages out loud. He is reading it now. I’ll do a full review on it sometime during the week. My writing is still scant but I can feel it is about to burst forth.

Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee and thank you to our weekend coffee host, Diana, from part-time monster for having us and giving us a place to meet up.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. I had a very good week. I spend time with my son and grandmother. The weather is colder and wetter here in Florida. A hurricane is coming here. I haven’t read any books or seen any films lately.

  2. Yeah, the inequity of rainfall – it’s heartbreaking. I have so many friends and family in Florida, and of course, all the other millions of people in the Caribbean who are in harm’s way, and those in Texas – hurricanes on my mind. And the people, wishing them safety.

I’m glad you’re excited about getting back to writing. That’s the start of the engine. raring to go. Best wishes, Irene.

  3. Thank you for the coffee Irene.
I do hope that your dry spell ends but without drama, i.e., that it rains, but doesn’t pour.
I will see you at the rodeo! I look forward to the details of your writing contest. I am working on working out the details of my contest, the “Bull Riding” event. Pretty exciting times at Carrot Ranch. #FFRodeo
