Port call in Papua New Guinea: FFFAW

Screen Shot 2018-03-06 at 9.12.13 AM

The passengers from the cruise ship stepped onto land to be greeted with a cacophony of sounds. Tribal drumming from one quarter, taxi drivers spruiking in another and the other quarters, two schools competing for attention, the begging bowl in front of the children who were performing for the cuiselings like seals at sea world.

There were passengers who were comfortable engaging, whilst others walked quickly away. Some paid money for photos with a near naked child whilst others gave generously, having no idea where that money would eventually go. Others, preprepared, came armed with paper and pencils to donate to the children. They knew it was the basics that were needed. For a short time the children would not have to use a canary feather dipped in tar to write their alphabet on a scrap of paper.

Word count 138.

Testing a Theory: 99 Word Flash Fiction

“Tristan what are you doing?” Ben watched his friend bag another raven.

“They say when the ravens leave the tower the monarchy will end. They’ve both been here centuries. Obviously they need a little help.”

“You’re rav’in mad mate. Why do you want the monarchy gone anyways?”

Tristan was silent as he netted his fourth raven. “I don’t but I’m a researcher and I’m going to prove or disprove this theory. Only three more and if the hypothesis is correct the monarchy will be over.  I wonder how it’ll happen.”

“Lets hope it doesn’t. Imagine a President for life.”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

March 1, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes a raven. It can be in nature or used to describe humanity as a metaphor. Follow the bird. Go where the prompt leads.

Respond by March 6, 2018, to be included in the compilation (published March 7). Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden: A Book Review

If you like humour, history and a bit of serenditpity mixed with characters that you’d like to believe were fantasy but you know people like them so you are willing to believe then you’d more than likely enjoy this delightful novel written by Jonas Jonasson.

The stye reminds me of Bill Bryson with his wit and ironical view of history. A quote by an unknown “The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” sums up this tale of an orphaned girl, Nombeko, from Soweto (the genius) due to the stupidity of others educates herself, becomes the manager of the Soweto latrine business, becomes wealthy only to be run over by the head scientist of South Africa’s atomic bomb program and is indentured to him. Her genius makes her invaluable to him (as he is stupid) but it also puts her at great risk.

A second story runs parallel to this – the adoration of the King of Sweden by a Swedish postal worker but this sours when the king bonks him on the head with his walking cane and he spends the rest of his life trying to put an end to the monarchy. To this end only one of his identical twins is registered as having been born. Again one is genius, the other stupid.

Finally we see Nombeko arrive in Sweden, meeting and falling in love with the non-existent twin along with a huge crate that has to be got rid of. This takes a deal of time and some fantastical events. Serendipity at its best.

Would I recommend this unlikely tale. Yes I would but with a warning that about three quarters of the way through it seems to hit a patch that it would be easy to leave it at that point. My husband did. I continued on and the ending was worth any ploughing I had to do. I particularly loved reliving the history of the time and watching how cleverly it was woven into a story that was as unlikely (or was it) as it was funny. A lovely piece of quirk.

Transfer: Six Sentence Stories

You’d think they’d have the tender transfer down pat by this point but no, there we were, all waiting for our number, ours was 175, to be called.

By eight thirty am numbers one to one hundred and fifty had been called whilst numbers to nine hundred waited in the theatre to be informed, to be anythinged other than this interminable silence as to what was going on. At ten am she said it would not be long before she would call tickets two hundred to three hundred. This led to a near riot as those that held tickets before two hundred protested that they should be next in line.

Clearly not believing she hadn’t called these numbers when she did put out the next call she included this fifty which saw one hundred and fifty people rise and rush, only to be standing in stairwells and corridors, leaning on sticks or husbands or anything else available whilst we waited impatiently for the small number of tender places available.

And we were the lucky ones as those with numbers nearer the end had their tender transfer within an hour of it being time to return to ship.

Out of this World: Weekly Photo Challenge

DSCN1074 (1)

© irene waters 2018

I have seen many beautiful sunsets in my time but to see a sea of gold was out of this world. After a couple of weeks at sea I had grown used to seeing a vista of blue and grey seas dependent on what the colour of the sky might be. If this had been the day before I would have thought that finally I’d found the gold at the end of the rainbow.
