God save Aus…and us!!

ATT11

Tony Abbott asks the Queen, “Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government?
Are there any tips you can give me?”

“Well,” said the Queen, “The most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people.”

Abbott then asked,

“But how do I know if the people around me are really intelligent?”

The Queen took a sip of champagne.

ATT44

“Oh, that’s easy; you just ask them to answer an intelligent riddle, watch”
The Queen pushed a button on her intercom.
“Please send Prince Charles in here, would you?”

Prince Charles walked into the room and said,
“Yes, Mummy?”

ATT55

The Queen smiled and said,

ATT66

“Answer me this please Charlie.
Your mother and father have a child.
It is not your brother and it is not your sister.
Who is it?”

Without pausing for a moment, Prince Charles answered

ATT77

“That would be me.”

“Yes! Very good.” said the Queen.

ATT88

Tony Abbott went back home to Australia by Qantas

ATT99

He  decided to ask Joe Hockey the same question.
“Joe, answer this for me.”

ATTA10

“Your mother and your father have a child.
It’s not your brother and it’s not your sister.
Who is it?”

“I’m not sure,” said Hockey.

ATTB11

“Let me get back to you on that one.”
He went to his advisors and asked everyone, but none could give him an answer.

Frustrated, Hockey went to the toilet, and found Clive Palmer there.

ATTC12

Joe Hockey went up to him and asked,

“Hey Clive, see if you can answer this question.”
“Shoot Joe.”
Your mother and father have a child and it’s not your brother or your sister.
Who is it?”

Clive Palmer answered,

ATTD13

“That’s easy, it’s me!”

Joe Hockey grinned, and said,ATTE14

“Good answer Clive, I see it all now!”

Joe Hockey then, went back to find Tony Abbott.

“Tony, I did some research, and I have the answer to that riddle.”

ATTF15

“It’s Clive Palmer”

Tony Abbott got up, stomped over to Joe Hockey, and angrily yelled into his face,

Do you want to live forever? At least live a long, healthy life.

from the web

from the web

Today my brother is taking out our Mother for her 86th birthday. Sadly he won’t be there as he lives in Switzerland and my husband and I are going in his stead. We’ll think of him whilst we dine at his expense. This is our third attempt at having this lunch. The first cancelled as the cardiologist decided that Mum required a pacemaker and surgery fell on the day we had planned for the celebration.  The next time, cancelled again due to a probable heart attack which saw her readmitted to hospital but this time the day has dawned and it looks like we are going to make it.

Naturally as one gets older and having a mother who is old (though she doesn’t think so) makes one reflects on one’s life and what you want to be like when you are older so when My brother (he doesn’t post often but wow when he does) put me on to this fascinating article which examines longevity I read it avidly. The article’s author Eric Barker starts by asking the question “so is it possible to live forever?” The answer to this and other questions is found at http://time.com/108249/is-it-possible-to-live-forever-how-to-live-a-long-healthy-life/

Although the average age is getting older (more people living to 100 than ever) it seems as though there is a full stop in human existence because no more people are reaching the incredibly old ages than ever before. Not surprising the studies mentioned in the article found that we don’t want to live forever. I know I for one don’t want to and that time that I do have I want to be healthy and fit and have lots of friends around me. Once my friends start going that is when I would want to go also (says I before this starts to happen).  Back to the article where the studies concurred that we want a great quality of life for the time we are living.

Interestingly it said from the age of forty our birthdate was the least accurate predictor of our actual age. I’m sure we all know people in their nineties who look like they are in their seventies and people in their seventies who look like they are in their nineties.  The article talked of many studies looking at ways of increasing longevity. It found diet and exercise had less impact on how long we lived than we expected. A low-fat, low carb, high protein, vegetarian , vegan diet are not the major factors in making us live longer. Thank heavens for that (I’m far from fanatical about diet though not unhealthily so). It did quote the results of some interesting studies  which barring accidents means I should live to a fairly ripe age such as: if you have a friend that you can ring at 4am in the morning to have a chat with your lifespan will increase by up to 7.5 years. Other traits which have an effect are being happy, good, vain, being positive and conscientiousness with just the right amount of stress. Relationships are one of the most important factors. Read the article – its fascinating.

Golly – I wonder if my nephews will take me out for my birthday lunch when I reach 100.

Huntie put her on the Spot – A writing process blog hop passed on

Thanks must go to M-R  of  Staying Visible who has passed the following questions on to me after she was put on a spot by Huntie. M-R’s site is exactly what the title says – it is her staying visible to the world. She has written a wonderful memoir of her time as a 5’7″ bombshell who fell in love with Stringer and their time in the Australian film industry. And Then Like My Dreams, her memoir will ensure that Stringer, sadly gone, is not forgotten. But M-R is more than just her book – she’s an Aussie battler who in her distinctly Aussie way with Aussie sense of humour rants about the political affairs in Australia, promotes other bloggers and writes other gems.

Anyway back to the questions:

1 What am I working on at the moment?
2 How does my work differ from others of its genre?
3 Why do I write what I do?
4 How does my writing process work?

1. At the moment I am working on three things. a) My confirmation of candidature document which is where I persuade a panel of judges that the research that I have been given provisional approval to carry out is worthy of the institution and  convince them that I am capable of successfully doing it.  I have almost finished the first draft – a daunting project. b) I am also working on a paper to present at a conference (presuming that approval has been received by the time the conference is held in November). c) I am also continuing work on my sequel memoir and also d) a daily blog post should be included here also.

2. a) My research question, b) my paper, c) my experience and d) blogging  – you can answer that.

3. a)Interest,  a &b) requirement,  c &d )I love writing and prompts, challenges and stuff I just want to write.

4. The last time I did a writing process post I was just writing creatively and the process was quite different. A lot of thinking which gave me the bones and then it was quick to write followed by a quick edit and it was done.  I could easily write a minimum of 2000 words a day. With research and academic writing I am down to a couple of hundred words with much research undertaken before putting pen to paper.

The three people I am nominating to let us know their writing process are:

The Wheel barrow : May 21st Flash Fiction Challenge

The sound came again. Closer this time. It sounded like a squeaky wheel barrow. He ran to his mother’s room. She would know what to do. Hugging, they listened to the sound. She rang the police. Arriving quickly they searched outside, returning pronouncing the culprit was a leaking hot water system. The plumber was called and the leak repaired. The next night he was again woken by the sound of a wheelbarrow. Not waking his mother he went to check the hot water. He saw the wheelbarrow when suddenly, a hand over his mouth turned his scream silent.

Bite Size Memoir Number 4: Sports Day

© irene waters 2014

© irene waters 2014

Sports days were fun events in primary school. In addition to the normal running events there were also races such as the egg and spoon race, the sack race and the three-legged race. Races that even the non-athletic child wanted to enter. In those days I entered everything even though I was far from athletic and I occasionally took out prizes. Whether that was because of my talent or a policy that every child went home with a prize I don’t know and I don’t care. We looked forward to those days unlike my years in high school where the competition was high and I wasn’t in the race from the beginning. Had my asthma been diagnosed earlier this may have been different. Two of my friends entered all events whilst I entered the walking race and the javelin throwing, that was, if I couldn’t get my parents to write a permission to be absent slip.
