Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Signs at Jaspers
(15 photos) Every morning we walk our dogs. It would be impossible to miss this morning tradition as the dogs both give us clear signs, mainly vocal, that it is time to go.
Depending on the signs that our old boy Zack gives us we either do the long walk or the short walk. Whichever we do we end up at Jaspers. Here they know what I want. No sign is necessary, it just arrives. For me its a long black and a Bircher muesili, for my husband a cappuccino. He is less predictable than I and has to indicate, via an order if he would like something to eat as well. Normally for him though it is just a cappuccino.
The dogs love going here as well. A sure sign of this is that when we walk by in the afternoon when Jasper’s is closed the dogs still try to go up the stairs to get there. In the morning they sit, a sign that they are ready for their treats which one of the friendly staff give them
and then they lay down to sleep a sign that at Jasper’s they are truly relaxed.
There are other signs at Jaspers. Changing signs. Inspirational signs. I particularly like this weeks sign and was planning on using it for a full post but in a challenge about signs it had to be included.
My husband’s favourite.
And great bread is certainly what you get at Jaspers. A sign of this is that when we buy a loaf we cannot stop at one slice or even two. And finally a sign I abide with

Bite Size Memoir: Discovery
This fortnight Lisa has given the prompt discovery for Bite Size Memoir. She talks about her discovery through memoir and her joy of watching her toddler discover. Life is full of discovery and reflection when you do discover. Some things discovered come as bolts of lightning out of the blue, giving clarity and life changing effects. Others are so subtle that you don’t know you have discovered them until you notice some imperceptible change in your attitude or behaviour. These are the intangible discoveries. Other discoveries are made with the aid of newspapers, travel and education to name just a few of the tangible ways it can happen.
So what discovery do I want to reflect on………
When my first marriage ended I returned home to live. Living in my parents’ house as an adult was a journey of discovery. My eyes now open to the love they shared. It was always there but as a child I had my eyes shut or my mind not yet awakened. There was give and take. Each conceding on somethings because it gave them pleasure to see the other happy. Conversations, little touches, concern for each other and my Dad always complimented mother on how she looked. When he died I grieved for mother losing a man who loved her totally .
Perhaps I was thick as two wooden railway sleepers but the discovery did come as a surprise. Not because I thought that they didn’t love each other. They hadn’t changed. It was I seeing them as people, not parents.
Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Yellow (Ducks)
(9 photos)
By the start
the old lady craning ,
waiting,
bets placed.
ducks are ready
the river straining
waiting
release will be soon
Off they float
The current taking
Some waiting
In an eddy they are caught
Oh no! Some won’t make it
Hitting
Upturning
The wrong one
crossed the finish first
Luckily a place that welcomes ducks in the Kandanga Hotel. It seemed incongrouous at the time. North Queensland a place of he men and serious drinking and a duck lounge?
Where do these daffy’s fit? Of course they fit – Daffy, Donald’s girlfriend was one of my favourites.
And ducks are birds and I just thought these were sweet.

99 Word Flash Fiction: Blue skies won’t wait for you
“Come on. It’s a beautiful blue day. Let’s have a picnic.”
“No I’m too busy. Let’s go tomorrow. I’ll enjoy myself then.”
Grey skies with unrelenting rain met them the next day. “Should’ve gone on that picnic yesterday love.”
“We’ll go as soon as it’s fine.”
Three days passed and there was still no sign of it abating.
Jack woke early the next day. A beautiful blue day. He prepared the picnic basket before taking in a cup of tea to Joan.
“Cuppa Joan” She stared back at him with unseeing eyes.
“Blue skies won’t wait for you.”
This is in response to Charli’s prompt: September 24, 2014 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) include a story where “blue skies won’t wait for you.” What is your character waiting for? Is it too late or does the impulse come in time? Maybe blue skies are a calling. Try not to think to deeply, and do a quick free-write. Invite your unconscious mind to the page and see what it makes of the phrase.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Nightime (city and country)
(13 photos) In the city being in the dark is only available inside your head: not having knowledge about an event or something of the like. The city lights twinkle out and the light house in the lake is bathed in light that one wonders why the light of warning needs to be in operation as well. It brings to mind the Seekers song “Close your eyes, light the light I’m staying home tonight far away from the bustle and the bright city lights………..” Perhaps that is why I choose to live in the country.
The difference is profound. When night falls unless the stars and the moon are out (and I have never successfully taken stars so any tips would be appreciated) the blackness is total.
