By the start
the old lady craning ,
waiting,
bets placed.

ducks are ready
the river straining
waiting
release will be soon

Off they float
The current taking
Some waiting
In an eddy they are caught

Oh no! Some won’t make it
Hitting
Upturning
The wrong one
crossed the finish first

Luckily a place that welcomes ducks in the Kandanga Hotel. It seemed incongrouous at the time. North Queensland a place of he men and serious drinking and a duck lounge?

Where do these daffy’s fit? Of course they fit – Daffy, Donald’s girlfriend was one of my favourites.

And ducks are birds and I just thought these were sweet.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Wonderful photos, Irene. They brought a smile to my lips! Did you ever read Make Way for Ducklings when you were a little girl? One of my favorite books.

Thanks Noelle. For once we don’t seem to have shared a childhood book. This is one I have never heard of.

You missed a classic. You can check it out on Wikipedia. The ducklings in the story are named Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack.

I’ll do that as long as they don’t get eaten by foxes or the like. I get a trifle depressed seeing the ducks with their brood and almost daily the numbers dwindle until they have one or two that survive.

Great photos Irene with the ducks. My favourite is your spaniel, though the daffodils are beautiful too!

Barbara the cocker is a delight. Full of the joys of spring. That bird however is his. I’m not game to test out whether he’d fight to the death for it but he puts on a good performance. In one way though it is good because retiring later than my husband the dog is often on the bed when I go in. All I have to do to get him off is whisper “I’m going to get your bird” and he flies off the bed, already growling and grabs his bird. I then get peace in bed until 5am when again he thinks it is time to join us on the bed.

I wonder how that woman is going to get off her walker. She looks as though she may have to stay on that seat until someone undoes some of the screws that hold the contraption together.
I love daffodils. I wish they would bloom all during the warm months.

She didn’t have a problem getting up but she sat for a long time as getting the ducks to stay in the correct position to start took forever. Lots of false starts then off they went.
Yes I love daffys too but I love the message they bring as well that summer is jjust around the corner.

A great vision. It was a fund raising event but really for the children but it was the adults that were really enthusiastic about the ducks. You would have thought we were at a horse race the way we yelled. Kids at heart.
