Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

99 Word Flash Fiction: Man It’s a Hot One
Man its a hot one
The sauropod moaned
I may be the largest
but my bellies the emptiest
My grass is all shrivelling
Man its a hot one
The Ceratopsians moaned
I may be the oddest
With my frills and my horn
My grass is all shrivelling
Man its a hot one
The Tyrannosaur moaned
I may be the most dangerous
With my teeth and my claws
But my prey are all vanishing
Man its a Hot one
A crater in Mexico
Kilometers wide
Rebounding meter storms
Set fires world wide
Man its a hot one
The dinosaurs died.
In response to Charli over at the Carrot Ranch where she asks:
July 1, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes the phrase, “Man, it’s a hot one.” You can choose a gender neutral replacement for the slang, “man” or any other general address. The phrase can lead, end or show up in the middle of the story. If the prompt leads you to a creative idea to alter the phrase, do it! And stay cool this week!
Respond by July 7, 2015 to be included in the weekly compilation.Rules are here. All writers are welcome!
Guest Photo Challenge: The Local Watering Hole (Black & White)
Thank you to Paula for giving me the opportunity to be a guest Challenger for the Black and White Sunday.

Weekly photo Challenge: Doors of my Saturday
Having a weekend away in Brisbane and not having access to my archives where there are some spectacular doors I decided to show my day in Brisbane via the doors I passed through. There were surprisingly few of them. The first door seen was of course the shower door.
Then exiting our hotel door.
We spent a large part of the day at the Science Museum which had large sliding glass doors. The art gallery, then GOMA which we visited next also had large glass sliding doors but these were open and therefore not able to be photographed. Nowhere else we went had doors until the theatre.
The exterior doors to the Brisbane arts theatre
Emergency exit looking in towards the theatre. This door was used by the crowd at interval as it was the closest door to the bar.
As it says – the stage door. As it was opening night there was a lot of comings and goings with friends, family and theatre groupies going in to congratulate the staff. The Michael Freyn play Noises Off was done very well and I’d recommend it if anyone happens to be visiting Brisbane whilst its on.

Friday Fictioneers: Ostriches
Spain and the crowds who lined the route from Paris to Andalusia were behind them. Although a novice, John knew after the first gruelling 250 kilometres in Morocco they’d be lucky to get the car through the next two stages. The temperatures over 130 degrees had made them all boil. They’d used all their water. They’d need more to survive the 400 km to Ouarzazate. There were rumours that water in Errchidia was expensive during the race.
They travelled slowly, nursing their head and their block. Mile after mile of dry desert.
“What on earth?”
“Drivers who buried their head in the sand.”
In response to the photo prompt provided Jean L Hays for Rochelle’s Friday Fictioneers where all are welcome to join in the 100 word flash fiction challenge. To read other entries follow the link on Rochelle’s site by hitting the blue frog.
