(15 photos) Every morning we walk our dogs. It would be impossible to miss this morning tradition as the dogs both give us clear signs, mainly vocal, that it is time to go.

Depending on the signs that our old boy Zack gives us we either do the long walk or the short walk. Whichever we do we end up at Jaspers. Here they know what I want. No sign is necessary, it just arrives. For me its a long black and a Bircher muesili, for my husband a cappuccino. He is less predictable than I and has to indicate, via an order if he would like something to eat as well. Normally for him though it is just a cappuccino.

The dogs love going here as well. A sure sign of this is that when we walk by in the afternoon when Jasper’s is closed the dogs still try to go up the stairs to get there. In the morning they sit, a sign that they are ready for their treats which one of the friendly staff give them

and then they lay down to sleep a sign that at Jasper’s they are truly relaxed.

There are other signs at Jaspers. Changing signs. Inspirational signs. I particularly like this weeks sign and was planning on using it for a full post but in a challenge about signs it had to be included.

And great bread is certainly what you get at Jaspers. A sign of this is that when we buy a loaf we cannot stop at one slice or even two. And finally a sign I abide with

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

What WONDERFUL café, Irene !!! I am full to the brim with jealous rage. I mean, even those gorgeous paperbarks at the steps tell you what it will be like inside.
    A café in a bakery ?
    Sheer heaven.
Thank you for this post; it’s quite lifted me.

  2. I love a good bakery café. Just been to one this morning after rowing that makes French goodies. Yum! Jasper’s looks wonderful. 🙂

A great sign of good things in your life! 😉 Clever use of chalkboard to post different sayings. I’d love to walk the dogs to a place like that!

    • So true Charli. It is lovely to have a place we can go. This morning they shared it with a staffy, a cairn terrier and some other terrier looking creature. What I like is seeing people’s faces light up when they see the dogs and they will then often initiate a conversation. Just lovely.

    • Sherri, you are welcome to come any day as I do go daily. Our problem is going to be corresponding our waking, sleeping and opening hours. So sweet….. not today Sherri. I took them out before Roger woke and returned to collect him to go to Jaspers only to find he’d arisen and gone to meet us. Bundy the cocker caught his scent and nose to ground followed Roger’s movements around the house at breakneck speed, his paws and body depositing the mud he had obtained after his swim with a roll in the dirt. I have to now change the sheets, mop the floor, clean the lounge and I could……..
