Designed by Antoni Gaudi, The Casa Batllo , now a world heritage building is one of the must see buildings in Barcelona, Spain. Gaudi was an architect who belonged to the Art Nouveau (Modernisme period in Spain) and was famous for his unique styles and individualistic designs. When he gained his architect’s title in 1878 Elies Rogent who signed it declared “Who knows if we have given this diploma to a nut or to a genius. Time will tell”. Time has told. Constuction of the building commenced in 1905 and completed 1907.
The landscape, the old architecture and nature of the country was so striking as we travelled between Barcelona and Pamplona that it was clear that it would inspire great artists such as Picasso, Salvatore Dali and Gaudi. It would be difficult, I thought, in that environment not to be creative.

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Love this! Me and my husband came across these buildings in Barcelona, when we weren’t actually looking for them – it was a stop-and-stare moment! They do really fire the imagination.

Yes Rose Red. We were much the same (I have to admit ignorance to knowing it existed). We parked in a parking station around the corner from it and then just happened to walk past. Like you it was a stop and stare moment and I’m actually glad I didn’t know about it beforehand. Thanks for commenting. Irene

I remember seeing these buildings when I visited Spain many years ago and they are just so original and amazing with their building techniques. Great photos. 😀

Ha ha! Time has certainly told! Goodness Irene, what amazing photographs of amazing windows and architecture! My middle son went to Barcelona some years ago with his class when he was studying O Level Geography. He fell in love with the architecture and has been telling me ever since that we simply must to there! Reading your post now makes me really want to go as soon as possible! Great post, thank you 🙂

Yes go Sherri. You are so close in the UK to get to all these places. After we had been to Spain my husband tried very hard to get me to move there for a year or two but I said I wouldn’t go until I could speak Spanish. I still can’t speak Spanish but would love to go back. Have a look at this church. It was in the middle of nowhere and then suddenly looms up in front of you. Amazing
