This week’s prompt ‘Satisfaction’ had me thinking. What satisfies me. Certainly food satisfies my appetite. Is it a lasting satisfaction however. How many meals can I remember in great detail because of the amount of satisfaction they gave me at the time. I could probably recount them using one hand, two at the most.

The more I thought about the word satisfaction the more I became convinced that the things in my life that satisfied me the most were projects I finished and finished well. In May I was awarded my Masters of Arts. That was satisfying, I’d worked hard and completed. A major achievement in itself but it was nowhere near as satisfying as when we built our house – with our own bare hands.

I was in charge of the project as Roger had used his owner builder certification to do major renovations on a cottage we had prior to buying the land. A builder friend directed us and we were the lackeys in this project. By the end we were convinced we knew everything there was to know about building.

We purchased a PAL kit home with a steel frame and after having a cement slab laid by professionals we set to erecting. It wasn’t long before we went wrong. My fault. I didn’t know how to read the plans and I butted two of the frames together but the wrong way. Luckily Roger realised that the house was going to be too long for the slab and we started again. That was my only plan reading error.

Putting the roof on posed major problems. We had a hip roof and the trusses were large and heavy. We laid the truss flat on the frame and with a rope we attempted to pull it to vertical. With only the two of us, one person was required to pull, the other to stop it going too far and falling the other direction and the non-existent person needed to screw it to the frame. All day we tried to get it up but in reality with me being the labourer we were a man short. Luckily it was Veterans Comp Day at the golf club just down the road so we comandeered a few oldies to come and assist and got the first one up. The second one we managed as we left it partially unmade and completed it when we got it up. It still took a long time and a lot of effort. We ended up employing a labourer to help us. From that point the work went ahead quickly.

After the house was finished we turned the grounds into a park.

The amount of satisfaction we both got from this project was immense and remains with us today.

Pie: 99 Word flash Fiction

“I’ve applied for a loan. I’m going to open a line standing business.” Blythe’s grin split her face in half.

“Don’t be ridiculous. You’d need lots of employees for it to work and who would hire someone to stand in a line for them?” Beckett said, frowning.

“It would work. The average British adult spends 67 hours a year queuing.  Think what you could do if you had even half that time back. Look I’ve done some pie charts.”

“Bly! Look up there. See the apple, rhubarb and I think that could be a meat one.”

“I love rhubarb pie.”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

July 20, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that features a pie. You can make it any kind of pie, focus on filling or crust, or tell us about the pie-maker. How does pie set a tone in a story? Does it warm the hearth or bring disappointment?

Respond by July 25, 2017 to be included in the compilation (published July 26). Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

More than a little talent or perhaps just a proud aunt.

At six years old I thought my nephew had talent. He seemed to have an eye for detail. His drawing of the mangroves was true to scene with areas of mangrove separated by deeper water. Although it could be said to be crude and his crabs not instantly recognisable I doubt that I could do much better myself. Or is this a proud aunt talking?

These two were done somewhere between 8 years old and 10 years old. He seemed to be experimenting with colour and like all boys of that age had a fixation on war both on earth and in space and naturally guns and tanks had to be drawn. Although I thought he had talent, because of the subject matter, I admired and dismissed. I didn’t fully dismiss as I did photograph his work. Somewhere at the back of my mind I thought that when he became a famous painter the world would be so relieved that a record of his early work had been kept. I knew that was a proud aunt talking.

Now at 11 years old I am convinced he has talent. I know the dogs. Muffin and Bundy and I think he has captured them to a tee. Not only did he get the likeness, including Bundy’s red eyes and Muffin’s lack of eyes, he captured the look that melts our hearts. It might not melt yours because they aren’t your dogs but I look at the picture and feel full of love. He did this one evening when we were watching television. It didn’t take that long before he was downstairs again telling us that he had done something for us. He could not have given us a better present. This one is being framed.

The next day he did a picture for Grandma. She has already framed hers.

We have bush turkeys up here everywhere. They are a real pest where there is food and will come and steal food from you without a second thought. Felix was obviously taken with them and I think this shows real talent. Mum was thrilled but a little upset that we couldn’t centre it in the frame. I told her I think that Felix wanted to give the impression of the bird running and it looks as though it will be moving out of sight quickly. Exactly like the real life versions.

I don’t believe it is just a proud aunt talking.

Chug Chug

The motor grinds

Gears whirr

The mammoth vessel

with motor of its own

Held fast

Pulled tight

Moved swiftly tho not silently

toward the shore

The mighty tug, tugs.

I’m sure I must have a proper photo of an engine or gears (even if only belonging to a clock) but today they elude me. I have therefore taken a little liberty in my response to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge
