Chug Chug

The motor grinds

Gears whirr

The mammoth vessel

with motor of its own

Held fast

Pulled tight

Moved swiftly tho not silently

toward the shore

The mighty tug, tugs.

I’m sure I must have a proper photo of an engine or gears (even if only belonging to a clock) but today they elude me. I have therefore taken a little liberty in my response to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. Would like to go on a sailing cruise. But partner reckons it would bore her to bits. There is something about going places without having to seek accommodation and meet time tables, going through customs.

    • We thought we would be both bored and hating the huge numbers of people but we came away loving it with plans to go on many more cruises. So nice to not have to worry about anything – you have no choice but to totally relax and if your partner reads there are oodles of good places to curl up with a book (I had plans but didn’t end up reading any.)

  2. Hard workers, those tugs. I always liked the tire trims around each boat. Did you get the Little Golden Books in Australia? Remember Scuffy the Tugboat? My sons loved that story.

Love the pictures and the poem! The bright primary colors of the boats pop on the water. That last shot, though, looks exactly like where I am in Michigan! I know there’d be differences, but my daughter lives on a hillside like that, over looking a channel of Lake Superior. I tried to find a similar shot: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/thumb/algoway-10-4-01-gl.jpg
