Sitting waiting for my dog to be finished at the doggie parlour (he being a German Shepherd Dog is a bit embarrassed at joining the well coiffed pooches but he does so enjoy being cool after a number 1 shave) we found a garden of hibiscus of every colour . The pale colours went well as black and white.

The death knell is rung: Trog and Other Animals

Trog and Other Animals is a petmoir serial. If you wish to start at the beginning go to the page Trog and Other Animal for the links.

Of course I was successful in my application as a haemodialysis nurse at the Nita Reid Community Dialysis Facility. In the country there was little chance of finding registered nurses with dialysis experience and so of course I got the job based on my job history including dialysis. The RN that I worked with had no prior experience so she went to John Hunter Hospital for two weeks training whilst I spent four days there learning the ins and outs of running a dialysis unit. On my return I then worked three days a week in Taree, a journey of seventy-five kilometres each way from where we lived.

This of course meant that Rod was now alone on the farm with only the animals for company, a situation he didn’t much care for. He would complain to me that he couldn’t see himself mowing grass and looking at cows all day long for the rest of his life. He too had to do something. He started looking at opportunities in the area and I felt that my actions had rung the death knell on our time on the farm.

By this time the calves had grown and the males separated and sold at market. It was heart wrenching to listen to the mothers crying for their babies during the weaning process.  We kept the female calves  to increase our herd. We didn’t think we’d still have our old bull by the time they were ready to mate although again he had got the cows pregnant.

After awhile Rod declared that if he was going to be at home alone  he couldn’t do it and proposed that we put the property on the market. I agreed. It had been on the market a month before we had our first viewer. The real estate agent for some reason booked him in to stay in our bed and breakfast.  The fellow was over six and a half feet, and carried a fair amount of weight making him wide as well as tall. Our house which was large looked like a dolls house with him in it. No chair was large enough to seat him comfortably and, as he was not an outgoing type, our meal conversation was very stilted.  We were all very uncomfortable and of course he did not buy it. The estate agent told us that he thought it was too small a house. In reality he would have had to have a house custom built for him.

Weekly Writing Challenge: Three Ways to go Gonzo.

In summary, the basic hallmarks of Gonzo journalism are:

From late morning a helicopter had been flying and buzzing around in the sky. I decided to head out in the direction it was circling and see if I could find out what was going on. The helicopter would fly around the area, always seeming to return to hover in one position for several minutes before flying off again. The drone constantly audible.

It wasn’t long before I came across a weather-beaten, older man dressed in baggy grey trousers, a long sleeved, hole peppered shirt, which had probably once been white, and a worn felt wide brimmed hat. He held out his hand in greeting, his lined face turning into a multitude of ravines as he smiled at me.

“What’s happening?” I asked him.

“ The Westpac rescue helicopter flew over this morning goin’ to an accident and spotted a crop of marijuana growing in the hills. Size of a couple of football fields theys reckon. So well disguised it was theys couldn’t find it on foot and had to send in de police helicopter to find it. Would’a taken ‘im days to build them terraces they say are up there. All set up with automatic water. Ready to harvest. Couple of million dollars worth. We knew something was goin’ on there. A few people had told the local police they suspected something, but they didn’t want to know. Couldn’t ignore it when Westpac reported it.”

At that moment the man’s neighbour drove up and stopped. Everyone was buzzing with the news. “They could have caught him. All they had to do was  stake out Jim’s place by watching it from my place. Every day he used to go up that mountain. They could have just watched and followed and caught him at it.” Robbie said.

Look up Look Down: Week 21

Bradleys Head in Mosman Sydney is a place steeped in history. A fort was built on the site in 1840 – 42 consisting of a gun pit and firing wall. Extensions made in the 1870s gave it three gun pits and more connecting firing galleries. With the British removing their regiments from Australia, these fortifications would protect the country from possible invasion by the Russians.

The mast (pictured) is the foremast from the cruiser HMAS Sydney. This ship was the first Australian Naval vessel to take part in a battle in WWI. Erected in 2000 it commemorates not only this battle but all Australian seamen and ships lost in conflict.

Bradleys Head was also the site of a Mission Impossible set but the custom-built polystyrene house  was removed on completion of filming.

The area is now a National Park with fantastic foreshore walks. It is possible to walk from Clifton Gardens, past Taronga Park zoo, through Bradleys Head National Park (stopping for coffee at Athol tea house which was initially the soldiers mess) and on through Clifton Gardens to Balmoral Beach. With sights of the opera house,  and Sydney Harbour Bridge along the way it is a walk well worth doing.

Some of my own personal family history is here as this was the place my Great Grandparents and grandparents and father watched the third Japanese midget submarine recovery after it entered the harbour and was immobilised with depth charges. The family home was ,at that time, a few minutes walk from Bradleys Head.
