I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Thursday’s Special: Stories from the East
(7 photo stories) Paula’s guest challenger Allan Hamilton (The Mofman) asks us to show a story using one photograph. I had to many stories to tell so I have chosen 7 different stories. Can you tell the story that each photo shows? To do this Allan asks us to show emotion and aesthetics along with other photographic techniques. His post is worth a read.

Friday Fictioneers: Son of Tane
Tiki climbed the pancake rocks and trudged through the cabbage tree forests looking for other men. He found nothing but birds — kiwis, moas and harpagornis. He was lonely. His search continued. Tane, his father, made a woman to keep him company after seeing Tiki’s huge excitement at seeing himself reflected in a pool. Happily they wandered. Chaste. Tane despaired at his son’s inactivity. He wanted grandchildren. He made an eel which the woman found. Tiki became excited at his woman’s excitement, at her find.
That Danielle, is why the Tiki is a symbol of fertility. Tiki finally worked it out.
Word Count 100
The Tiki is common throughout Polynesia but in Maori mythology Tiki was the first man. The folk lore depends on the maori clan and the region of New Zealand and their are numerous variants. This is but one variant although not true to the original in entirety. We have © Douglas M. MacIlroy to thank for double daring us to look beyond the monster for this story today. Thank you to him for also supplying the photo prompt.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Perspective Power Poles
These high voltage power lines run through our dog park. Due to the possibility of high winds the poles are secured with guy wires as you would do when putting up a tent pole. Looking at these from a different perspective changes the perception that I normally have of a power pole. The last photograph shows the perspective I would normally see these structures (without the flooding).
Created for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge where this week we have been asked to change our perspective by showing an unusual angle or point of view.

99 Word Flash Fiction: Charlie Chaplin
“I’ve found a secret drawer in Dad’s bureau” Charlie’s daughter told her sister. They looked out at the mountains ringing Lake Geneva contemplating breaking in. Their excitement rose as they saw an envelope hidden in the back.
“This confirms Great-Grandma was a gypsy. Dad was born in a caravan. No wonder MI5 couldn’t find records of his birth.”
“But why didn’t he tell. He could’ve re-entered the USA but he let them believe he was a bolshevik.”
“Yes and he could’ve got that knighthood 20 years earlier.”
“Charlie Chaplin was not only silent in movies but also in life.”
This week Charli has given us a prompt to look at an old mystery.
May 20, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write about an old mystery in the current time. Is it a discovery? Is it solved? Does it no longer matter, or does it impact innocent generations in between?
Respond by May 26, 2015 to be included in the weekly compilation.Rules are here. All writers are welcome!
My story is a BOTS and the mystery of Charli Chaplin’s date and place of birth remain just that — a mystery although the finding of this letter in 2011 perhaps gave weight to the assertion in his memoir that his “grandma was half gypsy.”
For further information on the actions of the FBI and MI5’s investigation see here.
