Victory : Weekly Photo Challenge

I could show you monuments celebrating Victory such as the Niederwalddenkmal monument near Ruedsheim  on the Rhine in Hesse, Germany that celebrates the victory and foundation of the German Empire at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. But I won’t.

I could show you sporting achievements such as winning the tennis Grand Final doubles but I won’t.

Instead I’m going to tell you about how I felt victorious (probably really immensely proud) when we took this paddock and built a house. When I say built it was with my own two hands (plus my husbands).

I went to technical college and did the owner builders course. This is compulsory in Australia if you are either going to build the house yourself or act as the overseer and have someone build it for you. It teaches you the legalities of what you can and can’t do, and legislative requirements that must be complied with. I did it rather than Roger as he had acted as owner builder for a large renovation we had done and you could not do it again until a number of years had elapsed. We had contractors come in and do the slab.

Roger got them off side as he measured it up to make sure it was square then night before the pour, found that it wasn’t, then proceeded to give the foreman a lecture about pythagorean theory. I watched the man’s eyes glaze over but they corrected the problem.

It was a metal frame kit house that we had decided to build. Each frame came pre-made so we only had to get them up in the right place.

We erected the first (the fourth bedroom) and then another before Roger discovered that I had read the plans incorrectly and the house was not going to fit on the slab. It was momentarily disheartening having to pull down our rooms but better two than the majority of them. This part was easy but when we came to the roof we were a man short. I was neither strong enough to pull the roof trusses up or brave enough to get up and secure them in place. In fact I was a man short. The first truss we tried to erect on a Monday and luckily this was veteran’s day at the golf club. Roger went around and commandeered a group to come and help and we got one up. The next day we tried a different method for the next so it wasn’t so heavy. I still couldn’t manage it, so we got in a mate of Roger’s from the golf club to give us a hand. The ease with which we got the rest up showed us that we needed to have that extra assistance and Randy stayed with us for the rest of the construction.

Which ended up with a finished product that we did indeed feel victorious. We had overcome the hurdles and achieved, but we weren’t finished.

There was the garden to go and

the courtyard and

the walkway between the granny flat (which was already there) and the house and

the swimming pool and

more garden.

We left with great sadness saying goodbye to a house and garden that represented much more than a house and garden.

Bergdis and Allard: C – Friday Fictioneers

©

© J Hardy Carroll

An ordinary picnic day, cricket on the lawn, fairy bread and pop.

“Has anyone seen Bergdis?” Susan fidgeted as she watched their  faces for a sign some-one had seen her daughter but only saw heads shaking. “Please, I can’t find her anywhere.”

They organised search parties to go in all directions. They had the ground covered but called the police anyway. A little girl in a white dress, carrying the flag when I last saw her.”

Within minutes the message came “It’s okay. We’ve found her. She’s playing in the churchyard with her sister.”

“No! She can’t be. Allard’s dead!”

In response to the photo prompt  kindly provided by J Hardy Carroll and the hosting by Rochelle who invites us to write a flash of no more than 100 words and link up via the blue frog on her site. If you don’t want to write have a read as there is always a varied talented selection to read.

The Revised Version based on critical comment. Let me know what you think.

Three Things Thursday: 12th November 2015

Three things Thursday created by Nerd In the Brain  says:”three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy”. Like laughter (take just 1 minute right now to laugh as laughter that you put on is just as health giving as that which comes spontaneously) being happy has benefits ranging from enhanced creativity (necessary for a writer and indeed for most of us) to improving our immune system.  Three broad categories happiness effects:

People are more physically active, learn better and have a bigger social circle

It counteracts all those negative emotions

And protects our health.

So I am happy to share with you each week three things which make me smile. The first you thought would have been the puppy Muffin, but this time it is Bundy. He always makes me smile.  For awhile I worried that his happiness had been affected by Muffin’s addition but yesterday they played together on the oval and it brought a huge smile to my face. Our family is going to be a happy one.

We also bought this during the week. In our neighbours front garden it looked tiny. It has a set of rolling wells on the aft section and I could see us rolling it across the road to the river. Roger could see us putting it in Mum’s car. Getting it home it is bigger (much bigger) than we thought. I still plan on pulling it across the road. I just probably won’t do it as often as I thought I would. Even with wheels 48 kgs is a fair weight which surprised me but still it brought a smile as I anticipated  photo taking expeditions gliding on the lake. Another perspective and I can’t wait to try it. May even try a bit of fishing but our problem is neither of us will kill the fish and it ends up wiping our smile off our face. Not the aim of the exercise.

Our toastmasters meeting on Monday night also bought a smile to not only my face but to those of the other participants. I joined two and a half years ago when we had about eight members. Now our numbers top twenty-four. The benefits we all gain from the experience is immense and the support is good. For me to it is great to hear all different perspectives as our youngest member is fourteen up to a couple of members around my age with a huge range in between.

Join in. It would be great to see what made you smile this week.

Frozen: 99 Word Flash Fiction

Dead cars littered the yard. Long grass grew around abandoned plastic containers and batteries. A child’s blue plastic wading pool reflected my deflating spirits.

“This can’t be the right place.” Jerry sounded hopeful.

“It’s 61.”

A woman appeared. We followed her, silent, into the garage. Huge chests freezers lined the walls, while two pups played in a cage on the floor.

“Only two left. I’ll give you some time. I’ll be back.” She left.

I cuddled a pup. Inquisitive, Jerry opened a freezer lid, momentarily freezing before banging it shut.

“What the hell are they feeding these pups?”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

November 3, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a frozen story. Is the weather the source of freezing or is a character frozen by emotion or lack of it? It can also be a moment frozen in time. What does it reveal?

Respond by November 10, 2015 to be included in the weekly compilation. Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

Our Mobility: Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge

Being born before they invented these contraptions  (not even seat belts were fitted in cars) the only seat restrainer I sat in

was on the odd elephant ride.

Sometimes though without restraint I felt like a horse running in a cloud of feathers

or get on the treadmill. Aging bodies aren’t meant for these physical torments. We live in a place where fitness and exercise are practiced to the extreme. I see the older people running in the street, their faces contorted in their body’s agony. Roger and I look at each other and say it can’t be good for you. If you had an eighty year old car you wouldn’t take the revs out to 5000, no you’d nurse it along.

There is nothing like wheels to give one exercise (and get from A to B)

keeping it this shiny must take a fair amount of energy.

I’m hoping to keep my mobility

and definitely avoid the last step.
