Obstacles: Discover Challenge

“I’m bored.” If I said it once I must have said it a thousand times during my childhood. I was an easily bored child. My boredom forced my mother to be creative and later it forced me to be creative. Instead of doing what I always did, or what the other children were doing I came up with my own games showing creativity in the design of them. One of these games was lepers. This can be seen here in the child’s voice and here in an adult voice.

Not only does boredom lead to creativity in childhood it is also the catalyst for change in chosen artistic pursuits. In fact, I would go so far as to say that boredom is a necessity in order to think outside the norm, activating our creativity in numerous ways. In art it may be a new technique of applying the paint, a different way of firing the clay. In writing it may be applying techniques that as an artist you don’t normally use in your writing.

In my own work there are numerous examples. My thesis for my masters by research was born from boredom with myself and my story. My creative work had come to a full stop as a result and I feared readers would be as bored as I was. I have searched and found techniques that allowed me to renew my passion and time will tell if I have achieved as a result a compelling sequel memoir to follow the memoir of our time in Vanuatu which was full of drama and tension.

In blogging also, boredom with the same format would see me experiment with different styles. Although I am not a poet I would try my hand at poetry. Not knowing the criteria for the different types of poetry I would just write and hope it worked but I wanted something more. As well as the imagery created by the words I wanted a visual poem that also displayed the emotion behind the piece. Called Renewal I show the slide downwards into homelessness and the descent to rock bottom and then with a V,  I show both the victory for the homeless created by  a single woman, Veronika, and represent the first letter of her name.

Having realised that boredom is both an obstacle and the means to freeing creativity I look further to see whether this has also been found by others and I am not surprised by the findings. A study conducted at Pennsylvania University by Gasper and Middlewood found that people that were bored outperformed people that were contented with their positioning. Another study from Central Lancashire University (Mann and Cadman) divided their participants into three groups and again found that those doing the most boring task (reading a phone book) had the highest levels of creativity.

It can only be concluded that the process of boredom (or the associated daydreaming which often accompanies it) makes people seek new ways of changing a current situation that is lacking and will look at creative ways to adjust a situation.

Hans Heyson: The Weekly Smile

Heysen_Droving

Droving into the Light, 1914-21, Art Gallery of South Australia

Hans Heyson was an Australian artist who lived between 1877 and 1968 (dying at 91 years of age). He was a well known name in Australia for his superb depictions of gum trees, the Aussie bush and animals such as horses and other farmed animals in the landscape. He won the Wynne Prize for landscape 9 times and left a vast legacy of watercolours. He also gave me this weeks smile.

For Hans Heyson the gum trees were characters akin to humans and he loved them as much as he loved his family of 9 children. Apparently, whilst out walking Hans came across a group of council workers preparing to cut down a gum tree that he loved. He begged them not to cut it down. He was informed the council needed the revenue the tree would raise for firewood. He persuaded them to wait and he took himself off to council and paid 1oo pounds to save the tree. The council seeing they were on a good wicket then started informing Hans of any gum tree they were proposing to fell and Hans paid for them all. Some he even paid for twice.

This gave me a big smile.

“Will you add me to your circles?”

“Sure. What do you want to be. Friend, family or acquaintance.”

“I can choose?”

“Sure.”

“Family then.”

“You sure? “

“Yes. Why?”

“Just thought you’d prefer to be in my circle of friends.”

“Okay. Put me in that circle then.”

“But you’re special. I don’t want you in my circle of friends. No I want you to myself.”

“Well create a circle with just me in it. A circle with just you in it.”

“Oooh I like that. I have you to my self. I can circle you with my arms.”

Weekend Coffee Share:23rd April 2016

newcoffee

Come on in before I fall asleep in my coffee. I am trying to stay awake for another couple of hours so tell me your news, make me laugh and have a cuppa and some seeds. Sorry that is all there is as I ate the cranberries for lunch.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I thought this week could only get better but I was wrong. At least though, we have discovered what the problem is and tomorrow morning Roger plans on rectifying it. His beard is being shaved off. A pity as it suits him but it is obvious to us now that whenever he grows a beard our life goes haywire and starts to revolve around hospitals. Last time he tried to grow a beard was before his 70th birthday. On that occasion a chain of events (you can read about it here) led to my hospitalisation and both Roger and I being blinded.

This time I’ve had my Mum who is finally back in bed to sleep but not before gaining a head injury as the narcotic pain relief she was having put her to sleep leading to her falling face first onto the floor, giving herself a head injury. As well as my Mum last night Roger gave us a sleepless night as he moaned (more like screamed) in pain as he hugged the toilet. After 4 hours he finally consented to me taking him to hospital. Morphine did the trick for him and he was sent home with a diagnosis of gastro. 8am x-ray rang and said he was to come and have a CT at 10 am. Not bad for a Saturday morning. 1145 we got the first call that our medical centre had got the results and the doctor wanted to see him straight away. An appointment was made for 1pm. In that hour we went through all the possible diagnoses. All dire.  Just as we were walking out the door. The hospital rang. That doctor wanted to speak to Roger. Now our hearts really sank but luckily although not good it was not a dire prognosis. He has kidney stone blocking a tube. The pain is likely to return but he will live to shave off that beard.

I’m sure I have good news as well. What it is cannot be retrieved from my fogged brain so I’ll leave it there. You are welcome to get your own coffee or tea. I’m afraid I’m off to sleep.

Hope you have a good week and thanks to Diana for hosting our weekend coffee share.
