Weekend Coffee Share 4th December 2016

newcoffeeWelcome. Come on in out of the heat. I’m betting we will get another storm this afternoon it is so hot and humid. I don’t think I had ever really understood the terms close in relation to the atmosphere before the last couple of days. The air is heavy, weighing you down. It feels like someone has invaded your personal space, is up close making you more than a little uncomfortable. I’ve also had pressure headaches (not bad but just there). I first got these in Vanuatu and they always foretold cyclones and tropical storms. We have certainly had storms the last few nights but very little rain. Just a superb lightning and thunder display. I guess it is almost the time of year for fireworks.

If we were having coffee I’d have to tell you I have become a narcissist but only in regard to my feet. I lie in bed of a morning, gazing at my feet thinking how beautiful they are. Several times each day I catch myself doing the same. It doesn’t take much for me to talk about them either. What I have found is that so many people have bunions, hammer toes and other foot deformities. They want to know my outcome so they can make informed choices for themselves.

Two feet at once I was warned against. Post surgery was not as painful as I expected although walking on heels only was difficult. Luckily I could still get out and about as my mother lent me her mobility scooter. I would have been better off if I could have rested up but with open houses that had to be prepared for this was impossible. It 12 weeks before I could walk any distance and now at around 14 weeks I don’t know why I waited so long. Although they are still swollen and I do get twinges of pain  every week is better and already I can wear shoes without pain. I have gone back dancing. I couldn’t wear my dance shoes so only lasted an hour in sneakers the first time but with a pair of ballet flats and extra insole padding I lasted the full two hours last Tuesday. I can see that this is going to be the best thing I have done for myself in a long time.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I chose (just luck) a good surgeon that does a modern form of the operation. I’d also tell you that my experience is not everyone’s so don’t rush straight out and have the surgery. My girlfriend that had the same operation (the old way) has had to have further surgery on one foot. She cannot walk for another 12 weeks. She does say that having only one foot makes it much easier. Roger played golf with a chap that had one foot (the old way) done 6 months ago. He was in a cart as he could not walk the pain was so bad. He has been told that it will take a year to two years before he will feel the benefits without the pain. So perhaps I am just lucky  but it makes me doubly delighted.

Okay enough about my feet. If we were having coffee I’d tell you that there is a new Times Past prompt. As it is the merry season we are looking at Christmas Trees. Would love it if you could join in. Apart from that I have been packing in readiness for the move, packing for the cruise, preparing the house for guests whilst we are away and catching up with people before we go. I am currently reading a book of short fiction Hinting at Shadows by fellow blogger Sarah Brentyn. I’ll let you know soon what I think but so far I am enjoying it immensely. Expertly written flash fiction always packs a punch and Sarah, so far,  is showing herself to be a master of the art.

That is probably about it for me this week. How about you? How has your week been?  How has your weather been? Any good books or films to recommend? Gosh I have been remiss. Would you like a cup of something before you go?  Thanks Diana for hosting our coffee shares.

One, two,Three! : Weekly Discover Challenge

img_2009

© irene waters 2016

This is hard – I did a tryptich just the other day, three photos when I posted 3 Lakes, 3 countries, 3 twilights, a tale in three parts – part 1, part 2 and part 3 and a haiku – so what creative new (for me at least) project can I muster for the weekly discover prompt “in the spirit of list making, the challenge is to create in sets of three in the medium of your choice. Poets might try a few tercets, or perhaps its most accessible form — the haiku. Photographers and artists might consider working in triptychs to capture a subject in evolution or experimenting with the rule of thirds. Playwrights, how about a comedy or drama in three acts? Foodies, why not envision and prepare a three-course meal? Composers, how about a new piece in three-quarter time?”

One, two three minutes have gone and no ideas.

One, two three hours have gone and still no ideas.

One two three days and I still haven’t a clue but that is 3 and it is time to apply myself.

1              +     2         =   3

Dream + Passion = Living

Firstly one must dream. One must have an idea but it is of no value unless it is added to passion. Passion is an enabler. It gives the person the power to overcome the obstacles and see that dream turn into reality. This must be what is meant by those who say “I’m living the dream.” The only things in life that we will end up regretting are those dreams that we did not live. Where the passion was not enough to see them through. Then we have a different equation.

Dream + No passion = Regret

Xmas Trees:Times Past

1957-25-yonkers-mrs-dunhams

Thank you to everyone who contributed or left a comment about dressing up, our last months prompt. These can be seen here.

This month we of course have to have a theme of Christmas. Will the disparate geographical locations give a difference in what kind of tree is used? Will a country’s culture play an effect making the different generations from the same country have the same customs regarding trees? Is it purely a familial activity?  This month I would like to hear about your Christmas trees. Is your tree tradition one that is the same as your parents and their parents and your childhood? Did you cut down your own tree? Was it real? Did you have a tree at all? When did you put it up? Anything at all to do with Christmas trees from your past is welcome here. Put it as a post on your site and link back or add it to the comments section here. Don’t forget to put what generation you come from and geographical location (country and whether rural or city). Full details about the prompt rules are here.

Baby Boomer: Australia rural

Our year in NewYork was the only Christmas (to my knowledge) that our family had a real Christmas Tree (and as you can see I don’t remember it photo above). I have been reading on blogs of people preparing to trim the tree, and put it up  at /after Thanksgiving. This made me think of how little tradition my family followed when it came to Christmas, although the meaning of Christmas from a religious aspect was always observed.

We always had an artificial tree. I remember my grandparents had a green artificial tree which was non metal. This allowed them to have Christmas lights on it which we could not with our metal tree for fear of electrocution. My Mum was so proud of her silver tree. She would often say how wonderful not to have to clean up pine needles. Thirteen days before Christmas the tree would come out of its box and we’d shake out the tinsel leaves to uncrush them from their wrapping tube.  We had the joy of helping to erect it, slotting the branches into the holes in the silver trunk. Our decorations were fairly sparse. A bit of tinsel, a few shiny coloured cardboard stars and the odd ornament (usually from a Christmas gift of Christmases past) would hang. Looking at the photo now it is a bit of a sad specimen of a tree and would certainly not pass muster these days but for us it was a time of excitement. It heralded a season of joy, of singing christmas carols, nativity plays, parties but mostly the tree itself was where the presents sat and for us, as children, this was probably the most significant part of the joy of the tree.

I have become a crusty old woman these days and erect a tree purely for my mother (who loves Christmas) or for any children that may be staying with us. This one is a branch from the park which I painted gold. Decorations not much different from my childhood.

This year I am not erecting a tree at all. I hope you join in as I’m looking forward to hearing of your Christmas tree traditions. Certainly seeing a Christmas tree gives me a sense that peace and goodwill toward all is possible. I wish you all a very merry Christmas.
