I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Creative Non-fiction: Memoir Monday on Tuesday
This is a subject I find is often very misunderstood. People often think that because of the word ‘creative’ that the piece is not strictly true, that the author has allowed some creative narrative content into the piece. That they … Continue reading
Voice: Memoir Monday on Tuesday
In an earlier post on the ‘I’ characters found in memoir I mentioned that the narrating ‘I’ could be polyvocal – that they could have multiple voices. Firstly, what is a voice. There are two meanings and one always occurs … Continue reading
Infallible memories?: Memoir Monday on Tuesday
Last week I touched on how we make experience and why each person’s experience will differ from those others that have the same experience. This led inevitably to truth in life-writing and the frauds that have been perpetrated by a … Continue reading
Experience: Memoir Monday on Tuesday
Last week I wrote about who memoirs are about – the ‘I’ characters that are found within the narrative. This week I ask what is memoir about? You may say it is about a personal experience. Something that happened to … Continue reading
A simple word ‘I’ :Memoir Monday on Tuesday
Occasionally I get asked who do you write about when you write a memoir. Although some people write about people they have known, usually well-known mothers or fathers, part of the definition of memoir means that it has to come … Continue reading
