I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

This weeks challenge is to give a twist in the picture, something that unexpectedly surprised you. As I have found there are surprises around every corner such as this palm tree certainly surprised me when on one of our dog walks … Continue reading
Weekly Writing Challenge: Blog your block
Seventy-nine steps to freedom. In that seventy-nine steps I stop for a dig in the garden. It’s my garden so although my owners ask me not to do it I do it anyway, spraying dirt everywhere. Then I walk quickly … Continue reading
Weekly Photo Challenge: Work of Art
Art is everywhere. Hanging on our walls, placed in gardens, sometimes, when you least expect it such as these bananas baked in the car then placed artistically. Okay, I know I’m probably the only person who look upon my bananas as … Continue reading
Weekly Writing Challenge: The Setting’s the Thing
The giant capsule hung, suspended from the diving tower. The white end facing the water whilst the red section sat in the wispy redness of the sky in which the sun had just set. The city lights made the buildings … Continue reading
Weekly Photo Challenge: On the Move
In Vietnam we were on the move mostly by bus but also by ferry (disembarking could be difficult), by motorised punt on the Mekong steered nonchalantly by the driver with his foot and by speed boat also on the Mekong … Continue reading
Weekly Writing Challenge: Our Heart – a lesson for those that don’t know but want to.
Today we have a choice. Firstly, we can reflect on being a teacher or a student. The only reflection that I am going to share is that I learnt very early in my teaching that you have to know what you … Continue reading
Weekly Photo Challenge: Spring
Spring does not mean as much when one lives in a warmer climate. Here, the trees are always green, flowers of one kind or another bloom and it is not the release of again being outside in the sunshine after a … Continue reading
Weekly Writing Challenge: Flash Fiction
Wheezing she said “We’ve got to go. I haven’t got my Ventolin.” It was good how she could turn on a wheeze to get out of difficult spots. As they travelled on his bike at speed a police siren was … Continue reading
Weekly Photo Challenge: Letters
Letters on signs are a record that you did make it this far and crossed the state line or appealing posters plastered around advertising an event (I think) or be reminiscent of, in this case, the song Edelweiss from Sound of … Continue reading
