If being with close friends isn’t reward enough then being in one of the most truly beautiful places in the world , the Pelorus Sound in the South Island of New Zealand surely should be.

The rewards we had from a day’s fishing there (and strictly sticking to the bag limit) were out of this world. The scallop haul with only one drag of the net gave us a hearty dinner.

Blue Eyed Cod and Huss (the first Roger has had since he left England and he wasn’t dissapointed) gave us a good days fishing.

The cost of the reward is of course the cleaning and gutting

but for such a wonderful meal which was a reward in itself.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

What a wonderful way to get fresh seafood for dinner. And real scallops! What kind of fish is that?

We caught blue-eyed cod and huss which is a dogfish (shark relative) – both white meat and both delicious.

Nothing better than fresh-caught seafood, although the cleaning and gutting definitely puts me off! Looks like a wonderful day tho.

Great day and I didn’t do any of the cleaning so it was just a great day followed by a great dinner for me.

Wonderful rewards on all counts Irene, even with the gutting, including a reward for me reading 🙂 I imagined the breeze in my hair and the joy of friendship as well as the delicious, as fresh-as-can-be taste of those scallops as if I had been there with you. Lovely post for this sunny Monday morning here in Somerset my friend 🙂

A feast of fish for you; a feast of photos for us! I never knew that you could net for scallops. I guess I thought it was more like digging clams. My favorite fish is salmon, or maybe trout. I adore scallops in garlic butter!

I love salmon also and we probably eat that once a week. The scallops were a real treat but done in milk – just delicious.
