Five Words June: Thursday’s Special

Again Paula has given us five words where we are invited to use one word or all in one or more photos. The words: branching,   vigilant, pomp,  hooked, continual.

The row of branching trees seems to be continual as do the vines, with their new branches just emerging. Into the distance, grove after grove.

A ship’s captain must be vigilant whether it be an ocean liner or a small river runabout

but only the most vigilant will see the delights that nature has to offer.

Pomp at play may be practice for later pomp in practice.

But of all the words that Paula gave it was hooked that got me hooked.

At home and in nature

hot and cold are found

but also in our hearts

we hold icy parts

but our aim in life should be

have more spots warm than cold.

Unpleasant Textures: Tuesdays of Texture

IMG_0672

© irene waters 2017

So often we only see the nice things in life, hiding away that which is yuk. Yes totally yuk. Imagine how I felt returning home to find that Roger had emptied our fridge of food, putting it into the new refrigerator he had bought.

IMG_0675

© irene waters 2017

That in itself was fine. I was glad I didn’t have to do it. Unfortunately I was away for several days when he did this good deed and didn’t get around to opening it for another couple of weeks when I decided that I needed to take photographs in order to sell the old fridge. Imagine my horror when I opened it to see this. I cringed. I wanted to slam it shut and leave it for Roger to clean. How could we be such grubs that we had this much mould…..

Instead I took photos to show him what had happened when he hadn’t cleaned the interior when he removed the food and the effect of shutting it in temperatures that were hot, and I mean HOT.

After the photography session I got down and cleaned it thoroughly. After awhile though the varying textures started to look, not beautiful, but not horrendous either. These were life forms to be marvelled at.

Mind you – Roger is under strict instructions that he is not to empty a fridge and turn it off if I am not home.

Weekend Coffee share: 27th May 2017

weekend-coffee-share-new-home-nerd-in-the-brain-1Come on in and have a coffee. I am so excited this week I can hardly contain myself but before we settle down what would you like? Tea? Coffee? Cold drink?

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that this week a huge cloud has lifted. I hadn’t realised just how much the waiting was affecting me until I was notified this week that my thesis has been passed and I now have a Master of Arts to add to my name. I had been waiting so long that I truly believed that I had failed and that it didn’t matter to me. All I wished was that someone would tell me the bad news. I was okay with it. Going on my reaction when I read that I passed I don’t think I would have been okay with it and I feel as though a cloud has lifted. I had thought my somewhat down mood was due to Roger’s unhappiness at the move, the move itself and my lack of creativity. Now I know it was not knowing my results. Now feel I can cope with anything again. All of a sudden a lightness has come over me. If you haven’t guessed I’m happy with the result.

During the week we have been working on the floor and have finished it except for one piece. Why we didn’t cut that piece and put it in I don’t know. We are in two minds as to what to do in the kitchen. We have discovered black tiles under the floorboards we pulled up and we are tempted to leave them rather than lay our new floor over the top. We’ll probably trial it for a week or more and then make a decision.

IMG_1381

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that last night we went to the Noosa Chorale presentation of Viennese Masters of the Classical Era. For a non professional choir the sound was superb. They had 20 soprano, 20 alto, 7 tenors and 7 bass singers. Shutting my eyes I could visualise myself in a cathedral listening to Schubert’s Mass no. 2 in G major, Te Deum by Haydn and the Coronation Mass by Mozart. In these they were assisted by professional soloists – a soprano and a mezzo soprano, a tenor and a baritone. The piece de resistance however was the second number performed – a cello concerto No 1 in C major by Haydn. The soloist cellist was Louise King, an artist of international acclaim. She was amazing to watch as her fingers moved on the strings. At times her strange looking thumb lay across the bridge whilst her fingers still worked. At times she looked as though she was fitting and her bow flourish at the end of each section was entertainment in itself. What a delightful evening we had.

Tonight we are off to the theatre. We are going to see the shorts on stage. This is a series of short 15 minute plays that we get to vote on for the audience choice of best script. The judges will also be making their decision if they have not done so already. Tonight is the first night so it should be fun.

The weather has been perfect. Not yet cold enough for a blanket. Unheard of almost winter weather. I’ve got my fountain together although it doesn’t yet have water running. I have to work out the slight problem of electricity to site. I have my frangipani trees planted and the rest of my garden planned. I am currently reading The Last Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst by Ron Hall and Nicholas Tomalin. Already I agreee it is strange.

Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee and thank you to Nerd in the Brain for hosting our weekend coffee. Other places to drop in for coffee can be found here. Hope to see you next week.
