The City of Falling Angels: A Book Review

IMG_3137Whatever else I got from the City of Falling Angels by John Berendt the book has given me an overwhelming desire to visit Venice. I started reading this book when the topic we were studying in art appreciation was  glass making. The first,  last and a few chapters in between just happened to be about Archimede Seguso – a Venice glassmaker. With my new found knowledge this book already had me hooked.

I found however, like many non-fiction works that this narrative, for me, moved quickly for the first half with me looking forward to reading it at every available opportunity. It then faltered a little (as others have done at this point) and I don’t know why. The writing was good and the anecdotes equally as interesting, witty and compelling as those earlier in the book – my reading just took longer. Is it because, unlike fiction, there is just so much more to take in when a narrative is the truth or perhaps, unlike fiction there is not a true story arc. That said – I would still recommend this book.

This creative non-fiction narrative has the fire that burnt the Venice opera house, The Fenice, as a theme that holds the book together. It commences with the fire, moves through who may be to blame and the process undertaken for the rebuilding of the structure and finishes both with a court case deciding who is the guilty party and the opening night of the reconstructed building. It ties up a few loose ends.

Over the decade he spent researching this book and living in Venice he met many interesting characters living in some of the palaces that tourists will never get to enter. We are taken into the heart of Venice being told gossip from different perspectives. Each chapter could stand alone but is linked because of the opera house.

There were some wonderful lines of which I will only put a couple. On p297 -298 “Telling the truth is the most anti-conformist act I know.” He said “Hypocrisy is the constitutional basis and foundation of society.” A chapter (The Man who loved others) I loved was about a man Mario Stefani. On p.299 Mario Stefani said “loneliness is not being alone; it’s loving others to no avail.” On page 95 Count Loredan was describing his take on democracy. Well worth reading. He has written a book “Democracy: A Fraud?” which if it was written in English might make interesting reading.

All up – would I recommend this book? Yes I most certainly would. If it can make me want to visit a place that previously I had no real desire to visit means that his description of the place and the people were so good that they moved me. There was humour and pathos and lots of names I knew such as Peggy Guggenheim, Ezra Pound and his mistress Olga Rudge and many colourful Venetians.

I have not read his other book but I have heard many speak highly of it – Goodness in the Garden of Good and Evil. I understand that it is written in a similar vein to that  narrative.

Self Care: 99 Word Flash Fiction

Prue’s mother was proving difficult. “Mum, self-care is the most appropriate place for you.”

“I’ll stay here if  I have to self-care. I want help.”

“But Mum in self-care you get help. Meals are provided, cleaning done,  bed linen changed and washed plus you can opt for more services.”

“Then why call it self-care. More like aided living.”

“Self -care is because you remain independent. You don’t need nursing. Aided living is a nursing home.”

“Send me to a nursing home. I’ve had looking after myself.”

“I know Mum. How about going to ‘Care… for the Self?”

“Sounds good.”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

November 30, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes self-care. Does the character need it? What does the character do? Think about how you can use this action to deepen a character or move a story. Go where the prompt leads.

Respond by December 7, 2017 to be included in the compilation (published December 8). Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

Weekend Coffee Share 3rd December 2017

wordswag_15073188796611453091488

Welcome and come on in. Let’s get settled with a cup of tea or coffee and then we’ll see how our weeks were. Personally I have had a good week despite (or perhaps because of) the unrelenting rain.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I was thrilled on Tuesday when I received an email that the story I had written was being accepted without change. Remember a few weeks back I told you that I had been asked to write for the university. The project is writing a book of nursing heroes. Everyone knows of Florence Nightingale and perhaps Edith Cavell but there are so many unsung, everyday stories of the above and beyond in nursing and we are looking to find these. A couple of undergraduates are doing the literature search, a couple of postgrads are scouring the hospitals and talking to nurses and I’m one of two creative writers who are going to write up the findings.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that the doctor called me in after a blood test and told me my cholesterol is sky high. He wanted to put me on tablets which I refused saying that I would try diet before I tried anything else. I have three months to turn things around. It was the incentive I needed to become fanatical about what I eat and already I have lost several kilos, which I hope is also taking some cholesterol with it.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that we have booked a cruise to New Guinea in February. Probably a stupid time of year to go as it will be so hot and getting into cyclone season but it is so nice to have something to look forward to. We may also regret it as we have gone as cheaply as possible meaning that our cabin could be small with other drawbacks but we decided worth the risk.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that the Christmas season has started. I have had my last dance lesson for the year and possibly the last social as well. Parties are starting – Mum and I are going to the Chemists Xmas Party. It is one of Mum’s favourite events of the year and obviously a lot of other elderly people because this year the chemist shop is sending a bus to the retirement village to bring the people in. We also have the carols at the retirement village coming up which is always a lot of fun. Roger is wishing that like last year we could have escaped Christmas as I am dragging him to several functions that I think he’d prefer not to have to attend.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that my favourite coffee shop Jaspers has sold. I’m happy for the now ex owner as she was struggling after her husband died. I’m sorry though that the new owners are not keeping on the girls. A horrible time of year to have uncertainty. We had a farewell party for them. It is like a family member has gone. They cried with us and with others when we lost our pets and partners and were always ready with a smile and a chat. And on top of that they made great coffee. I hope the new owners know what they are doing.

Bundy our cocker spaniel is finding it difficult to understand. He is a true creature of habit and since it has closed for a couple of days he is refusing to walk further than Jaspers. Hopefully our routine can soon return to normal minus the friendly staff we were used to. I hope the new owners like dogs.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that the rest of the time I have been writing, editing, reading and doing just ordinary stuff. Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee, it is lovely to see you. Thanks to our host eclecticali  who is our host of the weekend coffee share.

Just Good Mates: Six Sentence Stories

Jenny and Brian did everything together. Well, not quite everything as they didn’t go out on the dates Brian had with other women or those Jenny had with other men. They shared them afterwards, helping to extricate each other from the difficult ones when necessary. That was, until Brian wrecked everything with his marriage proposal.

Jenny stood, frozen with jealousy for the unknown woman, and said “Brian, what about us?”

“Jen, but we’re just good mates.”

For me serene will include water. I am a Piscean so it makes sense that I am most at peace when water is near. I don’t mind if the water is in the form of snow or liquid. Combine water with sky and I am in heaven. These represent serenity to me.
