Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Happy Christmas One and All

photo courtesy of Noosa Council taken at the annual Santa Run at the Christmas in Cooroy Festivities
The Santa’s are off on the mad dash. Will number 34 pass number 45 as they come around the straight. Number 36 already looks as though he is struggling to keep the beat but lets face it – it was hot today. Over 30 degrees centigrade on the coast so Cooroy, a little inland , would have been even hotter. It just goes to show what Santas will do in the effort to dash around the world to deliver Christmas joy.
But talking of joy we should not lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas. For Christians it is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. For all, whether Christian, another faith or no faith at all it should be a time when we extend our arms in friendship and aim for PEACE ON EARTH.
Vince Gill wrote
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
(child)
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Merry Christmas to you all.

Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge: The boys in their underpants
Gone are Zac’s debonair wolf-like looks and Bundy’s hippy locks. Coiffed and pampered returning with Christmas scarves. Zac asked for his to be removed immediately. Bad enough, he intimated, to be seen in public almost naked let alone wearing a Christmas scarf.
Zac has the short back and sides and for the first time his tail has been shaved. I only wanted a little off the tail but got the lot which has led to many people now not knowing what breed he is. He is, if you don’t already know, a German Shepherd, a proud dog who is really not too sure about wandering around in his underpants. Bundy didn’t quite get the short back and sides. I think the groomers thought it would be too much of a shock for us to clip off his long curly locks in entirety. What did amuse us was that they cut his left eyelashes to a shortish length while leaving the right long. Makes him look like a real odd ball.
Our odd ball family.

99 Word Flash Fiction: Rare Gems
“Dad stop. You can’t dig a mine under the house.” Janie grabbed the pneumatic drill from Peter and pointed him towards the house.
When her father was out of earshot she said, “You have to put him in a home. The house’ll fall down if he continues. He’s demented”
“Once a mining engineer always a mining engineer. He says he’s looking for rare gems.”
“No Mum. He needs a nursing home.”
“You’re right Janie. I’ll do it today.”
“Demented you think.” Talking to himself, Peter patted his back pocket. His escape route lay snuggly in the plastic bag he’d just excavated.
In response to Charli’s December 17, 2014 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about rare gems. It can be treasure, rough or twinkling, an object, place or person. Go on an adventure, let you imagination fly and kick perfectionism to the curb. You are in pursuit of something greater!
