Cheese 123

Throwback Thursday this week as I wait for the cyclone to cross land just slightly to the north of me bringing the predicted half metre of rain in 24 hours, is a post I did about clutter. Perhaps, having reread my resolutions and possibly being stuck inside for 24 hours or more, I may have a day of decluttering. It has again become time.

Clutter – although most people have a little clutter only 2 – 5% will have the debilitating form. Pathological hoarding (or Compulsive collecting), combined with an inability to discard these articles can cause severe problems. Filling an entire house in severe cases leading to risks from fire, poor sanitation, economic concerns, adverse effects on family and friends and other health concerns.

I come from a long line of hoarders. My father collected everything. In his entire life he had not thrown away one catalogue which had arrived in the mail. Luckily we had a huge house but it was a nightmare for my mother when she came to sell. Another of his many collections was the BIC biro. After cataloging when it started and finished and estimating how many writing hours it had done he would then reduce it to its components. The brass nib would go in on shoe box, the outer plastic…

Thursday’s Special: Cold

Parts of Australia can be cold, bitterly cold and more so when you are unprepared. It is hard to think cold when you live in the tropics. A similar problem to trying to decide what to eat for dinner when you have just had lunch and are full. So unprepared we arrive in Glen Innes on the Great Dividing Range and even inside my mother can’t get warm in the hotel room.

© irene waters 2015

A bit better rugged up but still cold we wait semi patiently for an event to begin on the edge of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) for an event to begin. Although it is spring there is still a nip in the air.

Now this was cold. We arrived in Greenland expecting to be transported by boat to the town from the airport however bad conditions prevented the boat transport and we had the choice of walking or waiting. I chose to walk with no idea of what to expect.

So in thin winter pants, a jumper and parka I set out on the walk not knowing at that time that it would be across ice flows and fording streams. The wind chill factor made it in the minus temperatures despite being early summer. The most inappropriate part of my clothing was the material sneakers I was wearing. They were wet through after a very short time and my toes felt pain. Frost bite I think would be an incredibly painful condition to have.

The Inuit fisherman however looked as though he was not suffering the cold at all. It just goes to show cold is a matter of how prepared you are.

In response to Ed’s Sunday Stills Challenge. The title he said from the song Green River by Credence Clearwater Revival. I wasn’t sure that I knew the song so off to youtube. I certainly recognised it and had pleasure reliving it so I have also put it here for your enjoyment if you want to listen to it.

Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge: In the River

© irene waters 2015

Slightly offshore on the Noosa river sits the boat house. It floats on a giant pontoon which are attached to land via a jetty. One day, when a cyclone comes I’m sure we’ll see the Boat House break its moorings and float out to sea.

At the moment however, it is a two storied restaurant/bar with takeaway fish and chips available on the lower level. A deep channel has been gouged around the floating structure making it a haven for the fish that live and spawn there.

I’m fairly certain these fish are not those that are served in their fish and chips but probably are fed with bits and pieces from the restaurant. They are huge but the public are not permitted to fish in this area.

Instead it has become a deep channel used for  launching canoes which can be hired from the shop on the jetty. The common variety seen at the foreground and two odd ball white skinny as skinny ones on the grass.

99 word Flash Fiction: Compassion

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

So beautiful. No external mark hinted at the catastrophic injuries she had sustained in the crash. She was my patient and I would give her the last dignities of life despite the tubes which gave her breath and drained her fluids.

“I’ll get security. The boyfriend’s getting angry. I’ve told him it’s relatives only. Some people.” My colleague went off, her huff travelling with her.

Some people indeed, I thought. I couldn’t leave my charge. I called over another colleague, who did my bidding.

The boyfriend stood behind the closed curtain with me. Tears streamed from four eyes. We hugged.

In response to Charli’s prompt: February 11, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that demonstrates compassion. You can explore weltschmerz(enabling us to care enough about what’s wrong) and meliorism(driving us to try to do something about it) if you want to explore those specific terms. Consider posting on February 20, too for #1000Speak . This is a call to action to flood the internet with compassion and with numbers make a difference in lives.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Symmetry

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

(9 photographs) I have found that in Asia there is much symmetry. Roofs are a good example. These were found in the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh Cambodia

Gates also show a symmetry

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

As do columns in the ruins of Angkor Wat down to the images carved in the base of them.

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

Symmetry is also to be seen in Europe particularly in some of the gardens. These were on Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore.

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

At home there is an element of symmetry but perhaps not quite right. A slight feeling of being off to the side.

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

In our Ampitheatre in the Noosa Botanical Gardens they symmetry is right except on the left a figure lurks making this too not right.

© irene waters 2015

© irene waters 2015

Apart from being a horrendous photo the computers photo booth has the capability of distortion to such an extent that perfect symmetry is achieved.

© irene waters 2015

Nothing to say about this one apart from symmetrical.
