The Final Gallop:99 Word Flash Fiction

Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y.

The noise of the gallop grew louder. Breathless, the sound of the beating hooves reverberated through her head until she felt that she was sitting astride one of the horses advancing rapidly toward her. They were a beautiful sight with all legs airborne, a momentary touchdown and then airborne again. Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y, Ken -tuck – y.

“What’ll I put on the death certificate?”

“Long standing gallop rhythm, terminal heart failure.”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

February 24, 2016 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about galloping. It doesn’t have to be about horses. Is galloping a burst of energy, a run for freedom? Or is it a sense of urgency that borders on anxiety to get tasks accomplished? Explore the motion in different ways — a galloping stride, a galloping relationship or a galloping mind.

Respond by March 1, 2016 to be included in the weekly compilation.Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

I found this structure a little odd

But it made a great frame for a scene at Mooloolabah.

Weekend Coffee Share: 27th February 2016

weekendcoffeeshareWelcome to a warm, windy Noosaville morning. Our normal coffee stop is closed for the day so we were forced to drink elsewhere but now coffee is ready for serving at our house if you care to drop in. You’ll be welcomed by all of us, including our four legged family members.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that it is coming to the end of BILS and SILS Australian stay. Two months has gone so quickly and it has been so much fun having them as they looked after themselves most days riding to the beach or to the river, up the hill to the Civic or catching the bus to the beaches to the south. They were perfect guests considering my preoccupation with getting my work done. We also did some trips and I always enjoy these. We had our last Friday lunch with them at Alexandra Headland at a place where I always feel as though I too am on holiday.

With new proprietors I loved the fun menu they had prepared.

We then put BILS and SILS on the walking track to Mooloolabah along the beach and we drove and parked my Mum on a park bench in the shade and walked back and met them half way. The weather was perfect for a wander but possibly still too hot for those used to German temperatures.

Last night we went to a play ‘Australia Day’. It was very funny and full of social messages that had impact because of the brilliant way they were presented. It made me think this morning of the impact of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Harper Lee. The overarching message however was that we are all the same and a line by the son of a Vietnamese boat person was that it is not what is said but how you deal with it that matters. I have always felt that this is very true. The company is touring regional Australia with the play and if it comes to a theatre near you I really would highly recommend it.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that Muffin had her first hair cut this week. She no longer looks like a puppy but an adolescent. When I picked her up from the groomer she looked like a toy dog that should be wound up.

I hardly recognised her but later at home and then today after our morning walk she was unmistakeably Muffin.

Bundy is doing well on his new medecines and we are cautiously hopeful that this will continue.

Contributions to Times Past are still being taken with a new prompt due out on the 1st March.

So how has your week been? What have you been up to?  Is it getting warmer for those of you in winter?  Thanks to Diana who hosts our weekend coffee. Get over there and see if you can come up with a name for her new little critter. I am hopeless at naming things and once had a pair of cats called big cat and little cat. Whilst you are there you can check out others who share coffee.

Dead wood lurks

Amongst the ripples

ruffling the peace and tranquility

A trifle blue

But I can see that brightness in the horizon.

The Ramsund Carving: Traces of the Past Yr2 01; Thursdays’ Special

IMG_0012

© irene waters 2016

This rune-like picture is called a carving rather than a rune stone as it was carved on a flat outcrop of rocks rather than a standing stone around 1030. It is found near Eskilstuna in Sweden where I was lucky enough to stay with a farming family for awhile. It is uncertain of the meaning of the runic text but it is believed that the Ramsund Carving was a bridge made for Holmgeirr’s soul to travel into the next life by his wife Sigröd Ormsdottir.

The story told on the rock inside the runic text, which is written inside a snake, tells of Sigurd the dragon slayer roasting dragon heart but before it is cooked he pricks himself and the melding of his blood and that of the heart allows him to hear birdsong  which tells that Reginin is going to kill him. Reginin is depicted beside his severed head. The saga of the dragon slayer was a well known story from the Icelandic Edda (from the 9th century and first written in the 13th century. It is a collection of sacred and mythological poems).

I felt very privileged to be shown this rock which had no fan fare associated with it. It was sitting in the woods with only a tiny, small sign pointing the way. To see the drawing itself you had to climb up onto the rock. Amazing to think it was carved over 1000 years ago for a privileged Viking family.
