Calm: Thursday’s Special

In 1697 a line from William Congreve’s play The Mourning Bride said ‘music has charms to sooth a savage beast, to soften rocks or bend a knotted Oak’. In other words it calms and it certainly works for me particularly on a grand piano with a maestro at the helm.

Equally as calming (despite this photo’s disquietening effect) are fish swimming in a fish tank. I could sit and watch these two, mesmerised for hours on end. The only time the calm breaks is supper time when, in a feeding frenzy they create some waves, only to again return to calm.

Where I live is also calming particular on a still day when barely a ripple is to be seen and the boats bob idly in the river.

Abecedarian Flash

As many of you know I enjoy a challenge and coming across an Abecedarian Flash on Jules from Flashy Fiction I was overcome with an urge to challenge myself. Could I write a story where each word started with the next letter in the alphabet. Was it possible I wondered to write a story without the use of articles such as the and a, or pronouns such as he, she and it. Without these could you make a story that would make sense. I firstly tried a dialogue piece. That I thought would be easier. Not so, for me at any rate. Finally I came up with my flash and it wasn’t easy. I would love to put out the challenge to join me. If you do one put a link in the comments.

A boy called Derek entered Fort Granada. He idly jiggled knapsack lugs. Maquis, not overtly periculous. Quicksticks. Removed sack tossed underneath verandah. Wham! Xanthippes yarled zounds!

Vocabulary:

Maquis – guerilla resistance force

Periculous – dangerous

Quicksticks –  Without delay

Xanthippes – ill-tempered women

yarled – wailed; howled

Zounds – mild oaths

An Ending: 99 word flash fiction

The door slammed behind her lover. Maeve lay back on the bed spent, almost too tired to care that yet another man had walked out on her. ‘Oh bugger!’ She rolled onto her side. ‘They come and they go. What was it she did wrong? Why didn’t any of them stay?Maybe I try too hard. Perhaps they’d stay if they thought I wanted them to go.’ She propped herself in order to see her reflection in the mirror. Smiling, ‘well it’s not that I’m horrible to look at.’

A door banged shut. “How about a croissant and tea?”

In response to Charli’s prompt where she asks:

November 9, 2016 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that pivots around an unexpected ending. If it’s the end of the world as we know it, what is the renewal? You can have history repeat itself. You can include dynamics that never change despite an ending. You can show a triumphant ending. A tragic one. A silly, “That’s all folks!

Respond by November 15, 2016 to be included in the compilation. Rules are here. All writers are welcome!

Weekend Coffee Share 13th November 2016

newcoffee

Hello and welcome. Come on in. What would you like today to drink? Tea? Herbal? Coffee? Hot Chocolate? I’ve got most things hot. Not so much cold. I personally stick with water so I never bother buying anything else. Hold on, I think my husband may be in an orange juice craving period so we probably have some OJ.

If we were having coffee I’d start by saying “What a week.” I think the American elections really threw some of us for six. I’m sure they delighted others. Initially I was overcome. How could someone who was a complete unknown apart from their high profile celebrity status life become President of the USA? Why did people not care that he inappropriately touched women. That he felt his power gave him this right. Why did people not care that he was running a campaign based on hatred? Why did people vote for a man that has bankrupted his companies at least four times? Is this a great  achievement that gives you superior accumen to run one of the biggest economies in the world? Why did….? Why did….? But no matter why they did and now the world has to hope that the rhetoric was purely that. And I sincerely hope that the hatred goes away. And I sincerely hope that he turns out to be the President that those people who were willing to accept those behaviours  thought that he would be. I hope he is a President for all people. Time will tell.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that our thunderstorms are starting. Yesterday we went to a birthday party but not before the birthday girl rang and asked if she could cook in our ovens as they had lost their power. Believe it or not in the five years we have been in this house it is the first time that the oven has been turned on. I had to get the manual out to work out how to do it and luckily it worked and even luckier it was not something that was going to mean I would have to clean the oven afterwards.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that we are going on a harbour cruise leaving in a few minutes and of course the thunderstorm arrived. It could be wet or it may have gone by the time we get going. That is the good thing with these tropical storms – they arrive quickly and leave almost as quickly.

Can you just entertain yourself for a bit or perhaps come back in a couple of hours….. Great.

Thanks for waiting. We had a wonderful cruise. It was the 30th Anniversary of our Toastmasters group and the weather gave us a bit of everything including pelting rain but finishing with a wonderful sunset.

Now it is your turn. What have you been up to?  Have you done anything, read anything, seen anything. How cold is it where you are. I had the first swim of our summer season today, (most people have been swimming for weeks but I like it hot.) Thanks Diana for hosting our weekend coffee shares and thank you for dropping in.

A Triptych of the Old Man

He wished they’d shut up. They were always talking at him, expecting him to respond. Not that he didn’t want to but the effort was just so great getting it from a thought in his head to words coming out of his mouth that by the time he got there they’d moved on to another subject. And now they’d told him he was being put away. His wife of forty years had had enough. Not that he could blame her. He’d given her a hard time over the years with his drinking and abuse. She hadn’t had a great life. He knew that and regretted the words that wouldn’t come. Not then. Not now. It would be strange in a nursing home although he didn’t think life would be much different. He would sit and stare just as he did at home. It really didn’t matter where you were bored. He’d been bored and miserable most of his life. At least then he could drink. He could drown out his life. Perhaps the home would let him drink. His wife wouldn’t. He hated her for that. He hated the control she exerted over him. He used to be a man. He used to exert the control. Not now. Not ever again.

She wished he would talk. If only he would engage. He would never talk about how he felt. She didn’t know if he loved her. He had taught her to love him. Had she ever really loved him? She knew that when she had tried to leave him she couldn’t live without him. She’d been miserable. More miserable than she had been when he was drinking. Forty years and two children together joins you but now she couldn’t take it any more. She couldn’t take the responsibility. She couldn’t be responsible for his life. She had then. She couldn’t now. It weighed her down. Made her anxious. And he didn’t give her any thanks. Not now. Not ever. He used to look after her. Now she had to make the decisions. She didn’t understand the world. Her children should be looking after her. She had looked after them. At least one of the girls had come to see their father into the home. They should be supporting her too. She shouldn’t have to carry this burden by herself. They’re family. It shouldn’t be up to friends to be helping. Nobody really could help. She was grieving. For him and for her. She really wasn’t ready for a life alone but she couldn’t live with him. Not now. Not ever again.

Hard to believe this shrunken man used to be tall. I looked up to him ‘til he started drinking.  Then I hated him. I still do. For the embarrassment he caused me and the anger he lashed out on her. My mother. He made me lose respect for her too. She should have left. Life would have been better for all of us if they had separated. Then. Not now. Now his skin is transparent and fragile yet he is still opaque. He never says anything meaningful. Never has. Never will. Tall yet shrunken. It’s his own fault. No-one but himself to blame. She tried.  She still tries. She should give up. But she doesn’t. She never will. She shows respect where none is warranted. She fools no-one. Except herself perhaps. When she needs us we’ll be there. It’s hard to be there for some-one you hate. I want to love him. I want to forgive him. I can’t forget. I can’t forgive. Not now. He’ll never hurt me. Not ever again.
