Weekend Coffee Share 13th November 2016

newcoffee

Hello and welcome. Come on in. What would you like today to drink? Tea? Herbal? Coffee? Hot Chocolate? I’ve got most things hot. Not so much cold. I personally stick with water so I never bother buying anything else. Hold on, I think my husband may be in an orange juice craving period so we probably have some OJ.

If we were having coffee I’d start by saying “What a week.” I think the American elections really threw some of us for six. I’m sure they delighted others. Initially I was overcome. How could someone who was a complete unknown apart from their high profile celebrity status life become President of the USA? Why did people not care that he inappropriately touched women. That he felt his power gave him this right. Why did people not care that he was running a campaign based on hatred? Why did people vote for a man that has bankrupted his companies at least four times? Is this a great  achievement that gives you superior accumen to run one of the biggest economies in the world? Why did….? Why did….? But no matter why they did and now the world has to hope that the rhetoric was purely that. And I sincerely hope that the hatred goes away. And I sincerely hope that he turns out to be the President that those people who were willing to accept those behaviours  thought that he would be. I hope he is a President for all people. Time will tell.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that our thunderstorms are starting. Yesterday we went to a birthday party but not before the birthday girl rang and asked if she could cook in our ovens as they had lost their power. Believe it or not in the five years we have been in this house it is the first time that the oven has been turned on. I had to get the manual out to work out how to do it and luckily it worked and even luckier it was not something that was going to mean I would have to clean the oven afterwards.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that we are going on a harbour cruise leaving in a few minutes and of course the thunderstorm arrived. It could be wet or it may have gone by the time we get going. That is the good thing with these tropical storms – they arrive quickly and leave almost as quickly.

Can you just entertain yourself for a bit or perhaps come back in a couple of hours….. Great.

Thanks for waiting. We had a wonderful cruise. It was the 30th Anniversary of our Toastmasters group and the weather gave us a bit of everything including pelting rain but finishing with a wonderful sunset.

Now it is your turn. What have you been up to?  Have you done anything, read anything, seen anything. How cold is it where you are. I had the first swim of our summer season today, (most people have been swimming for weeks but I like it hot.) Thanks Diana for hosting our weekend coffee shares and thank you for dropping in.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Yes, it’s storm season! I hope you stay safe. We’ve been okay here, but not everyone has been as lucky.
Your cruise looks wonderful, and the sunset worth waiting for!

  4. Enjoyed your post, Irene! I have been quite preoccupied with the American election, and have actually written an in-depth analysis of the results, which I have just posted on my blog. You might want to comment. And I’m trying to accept it and move on, just as many others are doing. Thanks for your coffee invitation!

    • Your post was very informative Diane and I’ve left my comments there. There is no choice but to move on, hope that the immediate reactions will be calmed down and that Mr Trump does what he says he will do – rule for all Americans. Only time will tell and in that time we have to support those that have been marginalised by his campaign rhetoric which has unleashed hatred in so many. Thanks for dropping by.

Your Toastmasters really know how to throw a party. I enjoyed my group when I attended, but we never partied like that!! Your cruise pics turned out wonderfully despite the political climate. Everyone is freaked out, and there will be some major lesson learned ..not sure yet what it will be. We all hope for the best and amuse ourselves in our private ways.

    • Yes, as with everything life goes on. Time will tell what the lasting effect of this will be. Our Toastmaster’s group is a get up and go group with a good mix of young, middle age and older members which leads to a great mix and good party nights. Thanks for dropping by.

  6. Like many was dismay at the election results as they came in. I wasn’t really shocked as I felt it might happen. I have stay off the media and I don’t much social media. Yesterday was a other hard day for me. Last night I realized it is time for a WOMAN’S RIGHT POLITICAL GROUP. We have them for everything else. We need to take back our pride which has been injured.I have vague childhood memories of the Nazi takeover in the 30s.

  7. You’ve never used your oven – that’s wonderful! I keep telling people that when I remodel my kitchen, it will have all vending machines lined against the walls – the salad one, the sandwich one, the dessert one – what else do I need?

    • I like the idea of vending machines. I mentioned it as a possibility to Roger and he said “Why? you’ve got me.” He’s right I don’t need anything else. Roger hates wasting energy so we have not used an oven for probably nearly 20 years. We have a convection microwave and Aldi now sell this little round glass thing that has an element in the top which we can do a roast in and it heats to temperature in seconds and so easy to clean.
