Out for lunch: Wordless Wednesday

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

      Thanks Marsha. It is the flower of a palm tree and looks beautiful and the rainbow lorikeets love to eat it.

        I couldn’t figure out the flower. The lorikeets are gorgeous birds. We don’t have any birds that colorful in Central California.

        Yes we are lucky here – we have some wonderful parrots and living in our back garden.

        I took on a job to write the memoirs of a 94year old nurse who when newly registered took up outback nursing and went all over the place on her motorcycle. In those days I’m sure she turned more than a few eyebrows and I thought there has to be a great story in there however her age was against us and she had limited memory and her children had limited bits and pieces of stories. I wish I had got there earlier but I ended up telling them I couldn’t do it.

        That is so sad. What a loss. That would have been a best seller! We finished watching Call the Midwife- all eight seasons. I was obsessed. If you’d ever like to do a guest post about the process of writing memoirs, the story that got away, or any other topic regarding writing on my blog, Always Write, is be thrilled to publish it. I thought I might try writing oral histories but I wasn’t good at it. My one client wanted a history of his business but when he started to remember, he didn’t have enough interesting memories.

        I understand the oral history problem t Marsha – I thought I would do my mother who was famous in her youth but her memories weren’t ones that anyone would be interested in reading. Yes I’d love to do a guest post. I’ll think about what I want to write about and get back to you.

    I love those rainbow lorikeets. Several zoos near us have these birds in small aviaries where visitors can feed them. The birds are so friendly, it’s a fun experience.
