Track: Six Sentence Stories

Gerard placed  the needle down on the old black vinyl Led Zepplin track Stairway to Heaven that he’d found at the market, reversing it’s tracking so that it played backwards. “Listen to this man. This is really creepy.”

They strained to interpret the words, ” Oh here’s to my sweet Satan; the one whose little [track] would make me sad, whose power is Satan.”

“Do you reckon they did that on purpose Gerard cause of all that hype about rock ‘n roll being the devil’s spawn.

“No idea mate but its the devil being in side on such a nice day, howabouts we do the foreshore track?”

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. OK. Now that’s creepy. The vid, not your 6 lol I actually had never known this about Stairway To Heaven. And to think it was my favorite song when I was in 8th grade 😀
I like how you begin a little dark and end up with humor 🙂

    • Thanks Denise. It was a big thing when I was growing up and there are a number of songs that played backwards have evil intent. Even Hotel California. Deep Purple, ELO and the Beetles were also accused. Some did it on purpose – Soundgarden did a song 665 where played backwards was about Santa Claus.

you know, since I’ve taken up writing as a hobby/avocation I’ve found that my view of lyrics and other writings has changed. as a kid in school, it was a sure-fire conversation-extender to analyze lyrics, to discover what the writer really meant.
I’m now thinking that a lot of lyrics and famous lines are there because they appeared to the writer… and hell, they’re hard enough to come by as it is without questioning their true meaning. lol

    • Yes I think it is the same with works of art and probably books to in some instances. I have spoken to a few artists that professed lack of deep meaningful thoughts regarding their work. Just think whatever you want they said. To tell you the truth I am just happy if anything comes to me and then often, in the writing, I think the character takes over what direction it is headed and what is said. If anyone wants to analyse it they should ask the character. LOL
