Female: Thursday’s Special

Only females can be mothers

and whether the mother be dog

or sheep

reindeer

or kangaroo

all will nurture.

Another traditional role of the female is as wife

Preparing food whether ground manioc cooked in banana leaves in earth oven

or roast meat and veg.

Females traditionally also do the cleaning and washing, as Vida Lahey, an early Qld artist portrays. This was unusual for her time as women were generally shown in a more genteel fashion, with little acknowledgement of the hard labour they put in.

Most like to just think of the female as having fun.

Nursing was once considered a female profession as again the female it was thought was suited to nurturing.

But now with feminism females take on the role of activist.

A female hunter is almost unheard of (apart from Buffy the vampire slayer) but this gun was carried for self protection.

Females are becoming (or have become) entrepreneurial.

and wise

from the small

to the old

to those that are missing.

To be female is to be able to be many things at the same time. Impossible for him who is trying for a short time to be female.

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

This is fabulous – one of my favorite of your many wonderful photo essays. I went from one fav to the next pic, deciding that IT was my fav, and on through the gallery. Yes, we women hold the whole universe in our hands. Really wonderful, Irene!

Irene, you always come up with many perfect examples for a theme. This one is no exception. The collection is fun and amusing. You covered species, races, different walks of life and you managed to share a very private and personal memory too. Love seeing you in your wedding gown, and dancing on a dance floor. Thank you.
