It hit me like a bolt of lightning. I loved him and now he was planning marriage. Should I tell him and risk changing everything forever? Would a wife accept our friendship? Few of his girlfriends were too happy with it. Jake didn’t last long with those ones. Either way our relationship would change. Jake can’t love me or he would have told me long ago, yet I know he values my friendship more than anything.
I organised a weekend away; bushwalking and Christmas in July.
Replete and relaxed I surprised him. “Jake! Please don’t go. I love you.”
In response to Charli’s prompt
September 23, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) declare an intention in a story. Is it one person, a character speaking up or speaking out? Is it a group or a nation? Create a tension before or after the declaration. It can be private or public, big or small. Does it have power to those who state it or hear? What does it change?
Respond by September 29, 2015 to be included in the weekly compilation. Rules are here. All writers are welcome!
About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
I struggled with this prompt, too, and I’m surprised how many people went the route of marriage and love. Usually Carrot Ranch is so diverse with its ideas and I’m always shocked at the angles people take on the prompt. I think something about “intention” and “declaration” makes us think of love. Well done on that front! 🙂

I think I just followed on where I left off last week. I didn’t have one creative thought in my head this week. Hopefully it will return next week.

Have completed this prompt (saving for Monday..) in 5 minutes. Along the same theme admittedly. Hoping speed doesn’t mean rubbish but I found it the easiest yet, which as I’m ‘blogging lite’ is the main reason I can justify a bit of fiction. Lol.

Blog lite, lovely lady. We’ll be here. (Though I am looking forward to reading your piece on Monday…) 🙂 So glad you’re joining the Carrot Ranch again! Speed doesn’t mean rubbish. I’ve done it before and I’m assuming most of the others have, too.

Will look forward to Monday. As Sarah said, “speed doesn’t mean rubbish.” It may mean that it could have had absolute brilliance with a bit more time spent but never rubbish.

So often we don’t speak when we should and other times we don’t know when to listen.

I think not listening is much more common than not speaking. Both are skills to learn when to and when not to.

A never to be resolved cliffhanger, darn!

Possibly, possibly not. It depends on what the prompt is and if my brain is capable of coming up with something.

I sense a serial here, hope to read more about Jake’s reaction. Might be hard to refuse a declaration like that.

Possibly, possibly not. If the prompt is right I will continue on.

The portrays the build up to the declaration, the statement and then we do wonder at the repercussions. The hints you give let us fill in our own ending.

Hope yours had a happy ending Charli.

I don’t want to fill in my own ending! I need to know. How will he respond? I wonder, whatever the response, will it bring her happiness in the long term.

I have to see where Charli’s prompt takes me next week. I think she is off to a wedding so you never know……
