About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
A tent and some cold drinks, maybe a little music and ah.. 😀

A dip in the ocean , then a hammock slung between the palms – ah, wonderful here.
BTW, where exactly IS here?

It is a little island off the main island Efate in Vanuatu. Brilliant coral and snorkelling to be had. I’ll join you.

Clever old you ! – that’s just what it looks like ! 🙂
VERY pretty, Irene: I see long spits on each side, and wonder if you need a boat to live there, as we did when Stringer built us a house on Dangar Island …?

To be sure of a crossing you would but there is a walking route with a wire strung out to keep you on track. Apart from very low tide it means getting wet but who would care.
Boat access only made Dangar a special place.

There are as many negatives as positives about living on an inhabited island. A bit like living in a very big flat-block …

That I understand and I’ve only lived in one lot of flats.

Which character would you be if you were stranded on Gilligan’s Island?

That is a hard one Charli. I wouldn’t want to be the millionaires, I think the scientist probably as there would be so much to keep my mind active on a little island like that. Then again if I was the young bimbo I’d be the only one in the running for the handsome scientist so that wouldn’t be too bad either. Yes so either of those two. Gilligan and the captain I hope not to be. Who would you be?

Great answer! I’d be the scientist but with Maryanne’s pigtails and cowgirl boot! 🙂 I agree — so much to occupy the mind and learning. I’d only be the millionaires if I could leave. I’d get Gilligan away from the Captain and I think he’d blossom.

You’ve made me remember – there were two girls a movie star and another. It is so long since I’ve seen an episode. Pigtails, cowboy boots and magnifying glass has given me a good visual.
