There were steeples on churches for two reasons. Architecturally it creates more pleasing lines making the building more appear more graceful. The other reason, and probably the main reason is to put the congregation in a heavenly frame of mind. The steeple was designed to draw the eye upwards, towards heaven. Often it was the tallest feature in the landscape and could be seen from miles around. Here it seems odd that the surrounding buildings tower over the steeple making the gaze go, not heavenward but on a money making journey up through the offices that reside within.

Years of melted candle wax. What joy I could have had playing with that.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
I recognize that Brisbane church. I can’t get over all that wax! I’m interested to know what you would do with it? Clever loggy doggy. 🙂

Are you in Brisbane Christine? You recognised it correctly. I love playing with wax. Put a candle on the dinner table and I have a toy for the night as I mould it, removing any wax that drips down the outside. These new battery operated tealights are no fun at all. The loggy dog takes very little care. I never see our neighbour walking it.

I’m in central Victoria. I recognized it because my ex and I spent some days holidaying nearby. Stuck in my mind, very pretty scene.

I agree. It became a landmark for us when we stayed in Brisbane recently and it helped us find our bearings.

I love candles, too, but haven’t played with wax though I keep all the ends. 🙂 I used to sell candles on party plan -Pink Pumpkin!

There’d be enough wax in this lot to melt down to make oodles of candles. I haven’t heard of pink Pumpkin.

Talking 1980s, Irene. Pink Pumpkin’s hostess gift was a big, garish, pink pumpkin candle. Besides the candles, there was a small range of cane-ware and wood items. I enjoyed doing party plan, wasn’t one of those pushy people though – that was beyond me. 🙂

For that hostess gift I’m not volunteering. I can understand you not being pushy but I bet the company was pushy to you. 🙂

But I love the contrast of the old church in front of the modern buildings. I used to be addicted to playing with wax. In its absence, I would melt plastic soda straws…until once it dripped down on my hand and burned a rather large hole in my hand. Very painful.

Ouch. You have almost cured me of my wax addiction Judy. I like the contrast of the church also.

Yes, I see that oddball dog! And great point you make about the church spire and the surrounding buildings. For a lot of people I suspect, their idea of heaven is found in making money somewhere inside those office buildings
I’d have fun with that candle wax with you Irene 🙂

We’d be like pigs in mud (only in wax of course). Glad you saw the log dog – he wasn’t too clear. And the church I’ll see in the flesh today as off to conference in Brisbane. 🙂

I noticed it right away strangely, but then I’m strange, so no surprise there, haha 😀 All the best for your conference Irene! Is this for your speech? Can’t wait to hear about it!!

It just shows you are observant.:) It went well. This was a paper on amazon and goodreads ratings, whether they are worth anything and a discussion on the various different ‘I’ characters that are found in memoir. It has now added to my work load as they want me to expand it into a book chapter.
