One night with a multitude of stars twinkling above us we stood on a bridge crossing one of the many waterways in our area and were entertained with a multitude of lights of a different kind.

From out of the darkness they approached gaily lit and with the occupants on board exchanging gay banter with those on the bridge as they passed underneath.

At one point someone from the boat yelled I thought “Hallooooo Rich people”
I said to the unknown persons standing alongside me “That’s funny. They’re calling us rich yet they’re the ones in the boats.”
We laughed and then one said “No, I think they said ‘Halloooooo Bridge people.” That made us laugh even more until its infectiousness had the entire multitude of people upon it laughing uproariously. Most had no idea why.

Those in the boats were using alcohol for their good cheer. We on the bridge were just enjoying the moment.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
What a fun story.

What fun! I love it when laughter is contagious and some are laughing just because others are.

I agree. I took part in a laugh yoga session on Monday night. It was amazing how our made up laughter soon turned to spontaneous although I was told that the benefits of laughing are the same whether spontaneous or made up.

Started in India with joke telling but developed when they ran out of jokes and decided they would laugh anyway. It has become very popular here.

Hahahaha! 😀 “rich people” vs “bridge people”. Fantastic. Great light show for you rich, bridge people regardless of what was shouted.

Absolutely. We bridge people bonded in a way I had never experienced and had a fantastic night of banter and light as the boat people glided past.

A misunderstanding leads to a bonding. I love that.
