I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

They look so peaceful. How do the dog and the pig get along?

Absolutely best of friends. They were inseparable as the pig had free range until the day she dug the septic up and then Mungo would spend time under the umbrella with her but wouldn’t be away from us for too long.

Nice sunshade for the pigs and they all look so content, happy hanging out together. Love the last photo, both expressions priceless, but the pig looks as if he is wondering if he is about to be turned into a couple of pork chops…

The dog and the pig loved each other. I think they are both animals that don’t like to be alone so they formed a family together. We were always told she was a great baconer because she was lean and long. It was never going to happen whilst we had her and I asked the farmer that took her never to use her for such purpose. After Mrs Wiggins left the farm (we had sold) I never asked the farmer what he had done with her because I didn’t want to know that he had not kept his promise to me.

Oh what a wonderful story Irene, so cute the way the dog and pig formed such a happy family, I love that 🙂 And let’s hope that the farmer kept his promise… ❤

Horses are like that, too — they like companionship. The pig almost has the look of a pale shepherd! It’s interesting to me to see cattle in what looks like a park setting!

Most animals, even humans, like company. I think all my Shepherds apart from the one featured would probably be horrified if their regal good-looks were likened to that of a pig but Mungo I’m sure would have been happy if his second best friend had been a dog that could have been with him all the time.
Would love to see how your paddocks differ. To walk through these paddocks you would find them rough and quite unlike a park but from a distance they certainly do.
