(4 photographs) What better way to have fun than a race in the Australian surf in rubber dinghys. The multicoloured helmets standing out like smarties in expanse of blue sea. Although this was for fun, it was serious competition aimed at making the best life saving rescue team on the coast.

This multi-coloured jet was fun even though the coins were never given to make the lights flash and the machine buck. Just sitting and brooming was enough.

This multicoloured implement was unadulterated fun. I had never seen anything like it but then not having children constantly around me I don’t tend to frequent playgrounds. It could get up to quite a speed and tilt when the pedalling was done in a fast and furious manner. They became dizzy before they tired of it.

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

That seems a lot of fun. Great for kids of any age, especially for those over forty.

Grandpa on the machine was in his early eighties and can still outwalk us up hills.

Have you ever ridden the surf in a rubber dinghy? Sounds exciting! But then as you described the playground toy, that too brought about a thrill. Maybe you will need to go to the playground sometime just to try out the rides for yourself! 😉 My husband and I have done that — he would do the ones that I couldn’t or wouldn’t … when we took our boys, and later our grandchildren.

No I haven’t waved surfed in a rubber dinghy Carolyn but I think it would be fun too. What a great idea to go around and try out the playground equipment – I bet you had a lot of fun trying everything out. I don’t know why I didn’t try the air cycle thing whilst we were there.

What absolute fun! Our kiddy parks would never have anything like the last apparatus because of liability – some of the US cities are now banning sledding because of the fear of being sued. I guess you can’t be a kid any more here.

It is so sad isn’t it. I sometimes wonder just how many of our generation didn’t make it through. I bet there isn’t much difference but to be a kid now – how stifling.

Would be a trifle difficult as I don’t have children. No he is my husbands nephew who was visiting us with his grandparents from Germany. The joy of grandparenting was shown to us during their stay and I now know every playground in the area. Lot of fun.
