Sunday Stills the Next Challenge: Cold as Ice

(6 photos) No wonder my husband emigrated to Australia I thought. Dartmoor in winter could be described as nothing but bleak. Colourless. Everything looked black and white despite being taken on a colour setting.  And cold. On this trip we had our fuel lines freeze something my husband believed just didn’t happen. Even my hair froze and could be snapped like a twig. It was simply as cold as ice.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  4. Lovely shots. I wish I was there. To feel once more a real winter. My wife’s birthplace in Finland is at present -14C which is according to her normal. The winter I was there 1965/66 we had a few days of over -34C. Houses were warm and cosy, wood fires, freshly baked black bread, a good read etc. Thank you for those lovely pics.

    • Glad to make your acquaintance Gerard although I feel I know you through comments on M-R’s home. I have some Finnish friends who live here from December to April to avoid the cold you describe in Finland. There is however, as you say something special about the really cold Northern Hemisphere winters. A trip I hold dear was one I did to Greenland (ideal for the topic today but I have already posted on it), Iceland and Scandinavia. I didn’t visit Finland regrettably but after seeing the remake of Secret Life of Walter Mitty my husband has finally agreed to make the trip north at some point. So perhaps one day.
