Yes Noelle. I was totally unprepared for how awesome it was. Looking at these photos brought back my thoughts of your pioneers and how they must have felt as they came across these sheer cliffs, either from above or from below if they were following the river. You’d wonder if you were ever going to get out.

I rode a mule halfway down the canyon wall – it was scary but they are surefooted. It got hot as we went down. A lot of people walked it, including my husband, but he was young and in good shape!

I saw those mules. That was one temptation I didn’t have although I’m sure it would give a totally different perspective to the canyon again.

Your photos show why the word “Grand” is put in front of “Canyon” to describe this wonder.

It can definitely say it lives up to the Grand in its name. I was not really prepared for the enormity of it. I think I was expecting something like the Blue Mountains but a little bigger.

Brave little squirrel! The vistas are amazing. I remember the first time I ever saw the Grand Canyon, I felt like it would be nothing extraordinary because I grew up seeing it photographed so often or on television. But in person…oh, wow, it is heart-stopping! Looks like you were there in early summer. It’s so “green” in your photos! 🙂

The two squirrels I see in older times as Red Indians (I don’t know if this is the correct way to refer to your indigenous people) watching as people invade their territory. An amazing place. I was there late Spring, almost Summer.

That first picture is gorgeous. I am ashamed to say I have never visited there. It’s on my “list”. I need to get going on that.

Before blogging I didn’t have a list but now I have seen so many places that are just absolute musts (like the coastline of Oregon which I saw this morning.) Have to find the time. Hope you can make a start soon.

“Life gets in the way” is such a stupid thing to say. And yet… I still haven’t started that list. I hope I get going on that soon, too. I feel like I’ll always find an excuse not to.

Maybe you are just doing your list right now and when you are finished doing it then the excuses will dissappear as well.

Oh this is wonderful, as I read your lovely poem I thought, ‘Where is that squirrel?” and then I spied him, enjoying the view very much 🙂 Wonderful photos Irene, I will never forget visiting the Grand Canyon, even though I was terrified of the kids getting too close to the edge 😮

Have another look – there are two squirrels. 🙂 I was amazed when I was there at the people who didn’t give two thoughts to disregarding the guard rail and wandered off to the edge at sunset, having to return in the dark. I imagine they lose a few and I can understand your fear for your kids. 🙂

Haha…oh yes, you got me again Irene, I see the other one now lol 🙂 And yes, I agree, and as much as I was so thrilled to witness the magnificence of the Grand Canyon, I remember it as being a fear-filled time for those very reasons
