There should be laughter
of children running and playing
picnic banter, gingham cloths
wicker baskets brimming full
of wine and cheese. Crusty bread too.
Images of summer.
Instead
empty picnic benches
their only companions
their very own shadows.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Lovely photo, lovelier words.

what a touching poem, neatly undermining the serenity of the photo and making it sad and poignant instead.

This one M-R I have to admit I do not know. Somewhere in France. I can tell you it was our second nights camp and we purchased two airbeds. The next night was in the Ardeche and we had real comfort night 3 as we purchased two chairs to sit beside the tent we had brought with us from Australia. We went on to make a purchase a day and can tell you each campsite by purchase, some by name but not unfortunately this one. 🙂

A delightful thought – the pair of you increasing your living standards daily ! 😀

Yes we discovered we liked our creature comforts – to a point – as the only night we decided to go for luxury and stayed in motel we spent the night wishing we were in our little tent. 🙂

You are right – eventual shade for those benches could be possible.

Shadows, too, can be good companions, don’t you think?

What a lovely, poignant poem to match your beautiful photo Irene…really makes me stop and ponder why the park is so empty on such a glorious day…and your picnic has made me very hungry, lunch time me thinks 🙂

Thanks Sherri. It was a great trip as we travelled in Spring, closer to winter, before the Summer hordes. We had camping grounds to ourself. The drawback was that many restaurants, cafes and touristy things were closed but we don’t like crowds so we were as happy as Larry. Mind you , I have never known how happy Larry is. 🙂

Haha…yes, I wonder how happy Larry actually is! But I would have been as happy as him too with the scenario you describe. We used to have a caravan and we made sure to go to all the off the beaten track places. Not much open but who cares when Larry is so happy 😀
