Pancreatitis. A potentially fatal, painful disease but I couldn’t hide my joy that Jonathon had been stricken. It’d given me this break. The G20 had presented so many opportunities, only not to me. Until now. One of two cameraman onboard for the photo of the year; the shirtfronting of Shootin’ Putin by Mad monk Abbott taking place on a joint parasail. When the world saw my photo I would be famous.
The boat in sight I took aim. The shirt lifted. As I took the perfect shot a hat filled the frame. My opposition smiled.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Nicely written and made me smile!

Excellent flash this Irene 🙂 Reminds me of the time when the Queen came to Ipswich in 1977 for her Silver Jubilee. My friend and I waited for hours in the cordoned off street to catch a glimpse. At last, there she was, resplendent in yellow, with the Duke of Edinburgh, not feet away. But there were several people in front of us. I struggled to get on tip toes with my Kodak Instamatic and took my shot. What I got was a lovely photo of the lady’s hat who popped up right in front of me at that very moment and by the time I wound the film on, the Queen had moved on 😉

I sympathise Sherri. That happens all the time at the crucial moment. Love that it brought back a memory from the 70s. 🙂

Great story; love the bitchy camera rivals. Like Sherri it takes me back t the London Olympics. I was lucky for seats near the front in the stadium and I have a variety photos of heads and disappearing ankles as I tried to snap the runners. In the end I photos the scoreboard with the TV picture of Jess Ennis on it as she was awarded her gold medal. Seems rather a waste! Still I did experience the unbelievable atmosphere of Super Saturday.

Haha. Yes it is the atmosphere you can’t capture on film (I don’t know what the modern speak for film is). Roger describes the atmosphere at an English football stadium. I’ve never experienced it.

Wickedly funny story of rivals! I wonder if heads and hats are the oldest of photo bombs? Great flash!

Until you said that I hadn’t realised that I had written a tale of two sets of rivals. I don’t think I had seen the leaders as rivals but of course they are. I’m sure heads and hats would come close to fingers in the most prolific photo bombs. Thanks Charli
