Yellow is the opposite to courage. It is cowardice or lack of courage. In the playground children would taunt “What are yer? Yeller.”
I can tell you I have the feeling of being yellow whenever courage is required unless the courage is such that there is no time to think and action without thinking is undertaken and then as I queried in my courage post
https://irenewaters19.com/2014/04/03/alphabetical-emotions-courage/
is it really courage.
I can really understand that feeling of wanting to flee. To not see sights that will stay with you forever is an option that most of us would prefer I’m sure.
I don’t like calling people a coward, or yellow. Most often it is a bully inciting someone not as strong to do things that they should not be doing or are not equipped mentally to manage. Those shell shocked soldiers in the first World War who were court martialled and shot because they could no longer face the front line were labelled yellow. They were certainly not yellow but suffering from being courageous for so long that no longer could they manage. They suffered from what we now call post traumatic stress disorder. Today they would be looked after. Well at least I hope they would be.
So the next time you feel yellow just remember that it is natural and the next time you feel like calling someone yellow – pause a moment and consider what they may already have been through or are you being a bully.

And yet the color yellow is happy and sunny. How did it become associated with cowardice?

Yes I don’t know how that happened. In Japan it is the colour of courage which somehow makes more sense. I haven’t delved into the history of the colour but I do know that if you put a baby in a yellow room it will become quite distressed. Interesting the effect of colour which you would be well aware of with your interest in art.

Awesome Y word! Never even thought of yellow as an emotion, although like you posted I have heard the term used when someone seems scared.

Thanks Cheryl. A few of my emotion posts had to be a bit creative such as X where I used the word xeroxed as an emotion.
