Sunday Stills: the next challenge: snacks (then and now)

I’ve never been a great cook. In fact, I’ve never been a cook. In my early days of flatting and living alone I became very adept with the tin opener for snacks and meals alike. All my meals were snacks – I’d heard of vegetables but unless they came out of a can  they certainly weren’t seen on my plate.

My meals and snacks didn’t always look that appetising but not being a gourmet I enjoyed most of them anyway.  This concoction was a sausage in a tin of mushroom soup which I thickened with Deb mashed potato. It kept me going until dessert anyway and I love my desserts.

In this case an apricot danish buried under a mound of ice cream. Yum.

That was then. Now I have more sophisticated tastes. My husband is an excellent chef and cooks all our meals and snacks. Not because he has to but because

a) he doesn’t like what I prepare

b) it takes me all day and every pot and pan we possess for me to cook a meal

c) he enjoys it where I don’t.

I eat very well with lots of vegetables and fresh stuff. On holiday though the snacks are now  superb.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. LOL. I can relate to some of that. When I lived in London I was saving up to come home. I lived on 20 pence a day. Either I ate 20p’s worth of chips from the chip shop downstairs or I ate rice flavoured with cup of soups. Cheap. Now I am just a basic cook. For me I just fry up meat and add salad. My husband eats meat, mashed potatoes and the same frozen vegetables at every meal. That is the extent of my cooking. 😀

Fun. I’m still enjoying ice cream and soup from a can, although I add to it to personalize it, and I know how to make killer broccoli cheese soup. Almost any soup, really, but gourmet like your pics? Sadly, no. 🙂 Congrats. 🙂
