Glynis, I think it is almost without doubt a flowering gum. Certainly the flower is that of a gum. The yellow flowering gum if a small tree and is often used in street plantings in Australia. The red flowering gum https://irenewaters19.com/2014/01/10/floral-friday/
is also beautiful. Whether you can get it in the US I don’t know but I’d be surprised if you couldn’t.
