Thursday’s Special: Flare

Mt Yasur is the worlds most active accessible volcano and when it goes off with a bang (which is frequent) at night the camera captures the flare of the red hot lava as it is thrown high into the sky.

This reminded me of an emergency flare being set off. In reality it is a firework set off over the water going high into the sky. Certainly it was as easily seen as any flare would have been.

There is nothing like a flared skirt for really showing the flare (and the legs) when dancing a jive. I understand flares in pants are on the way back in. For me I don’t know that they ever went out of fashion as I hate to admit it — I still have some.

These two show the camera flare when unwanted light is let in because as Paula pointed out a lens hood isn’t used. Above is in Germany at the Fastnacht parade and below at the Sydney Town Hall.

I’m glad to say I couldn’t find one photo that displayed tempers flaring. Not that it hasn’t happened but at least I haven’t been stupid enough to record it for posterity.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  3. Love all your interpretations of “flare.” Politicians regularly display the emotional aspect, though I think their faces are usually just as phony as their words. Photo op – sound bite = votes. Media frenzy – public apathy = lousy candidates often win. Ugh!
Oh, I guess you could say I exhibit “flare” right now.

Great “flares” but that volcanic explosion was the topper!

    Well done you ! 🙂
When you DO want to see tempers flaring, pop down to Sydney again and drop by: mine does fairly often, these days, when realizing how much brain-power I’ve lost.
    Sighh …

Love this post and photo of you dancing (it is you, I hope!)…and bring on those flares I say (in trousers that is!). And yes, thank goodness, keep well aware from those tempers flaring (road rage, anyone…note to self 😉 )
