Only in my house: 99 word Flash fiction

The kid had killed her two boyfriends. “Please record it. I’ve gott’a go.”

“No. Just hurry.” So I hurried. My trousers were down as I reached the toilet. Darkness shrouded the room. The torch should’ve activated. He’d taken it upstairs. I twisted to turn on the light but stopped myself. Electricity charges are expensive. Instead, I felt for the toilet seat’s position only to be tripped by my pants.  I fell hard; one arm landing in the toilet, the other on the floor.

Only in my house could this happen.  “Now look what you’ve done. You’ve broken my hand.”

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Your dark wit is shining as brightly as your character wished his torch would have been! Great pacing, almost slapstick if it weren’t for the heavy circumstances.

  4. I loved the ending, but couldn’t really get the beginning 😦 Who is the kid, and who is the narrator? What am I missing? 😦

    • Yes I wondered how clear that would be. The husband and wife were watching a thriller (the kid had just killed twice) and the wife asked husband to record it. She had to go to the loo but it was so thrilling she didn’t want to miss any. The wife is the narrator. Sorry it wasn’t clear and I probably should have written the kid had killed the babysitter’s two boyfriends but word constraint stopped me. Should have lost a word from elsewhere. Thanks for letting me know the lack of clarity – only by knowing can an improvement be made.

What a rather unsettling set of circumstances – and embarrassing too. I’d be hopeful it didn’t happen in my house. 🙂
