About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Scenic rail journeys are the best. Scenes you don’t see from the road.

And the oldest continually operating roller coaster in the world. Aside from indigenous culture, it’s not often Australia has the oldest of anything in the world. 😉

I didn’t know that. Quite an achievement.

Which one? Looks a bit Alpine so the Transalpine in NZ or the Orient Express? Doesn’t feel like the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada? Or am I completely off beam? But I LOVE railways so if it’s not one I’ve done I want it on my list

South Island New Zealand but it is the Christchurch to Picton. I think it is called the Coastal Pacific.

Right. We did the Christchuch to Greymouth. Pretty amazing save the tunnel was closed so the last third was by coach.

To tell the truth and you’d probably agree – everything is scenic about New Zealand no matter how you do it.

Gorgeous! When my friend visited from Minneapolis she took the train to Sandpoint which is 15 miles south of us. Actually, Amtrak passes right by our house. I was so excited for her to see Glacier National Park from the rails, but she passed it at 11 pm. It was too dark to see anything!

Glad Geoff asked the question Irene, I wanted to know too! Gorgeous view. We took the train from Fort William to Maleg in Scotland a few years back, that was beautiful taking us through the Scottish Highlands and then to a tiny fishing village. Spectacular. And one of my -many – dreams is to take a trip on The Orient Express. I don’t want much do I? 😉

Dream on Sherri. If you don’t have dreams they can never come true. This way there is a chance. The Scottish trip sounds great. 🙂
